Okay so would you have any ideas about what is the best way to put together a neo geo system. One thing that I know is I do not want a cd based system as they usually make noises and load slowly.

I have been hinted that a mvs board + something called supergun would probably be good but then there would have to be some kind of atx power supply. Either something noisy like a standard pc atx psu or something difficult to set up like a picopsu... And it would be a bunch of circuit boards laying around on a table or I would have to build a case or a cabinet... not easy. And I don´t know if using megadrive controllers with supergun is very nice either.

Then there is aes but those are very expensive.

So the final idea would be a consolized mvs... But I don´t know who can consolize an mvs and that would probably cost very very much too. There´s one on evilbay that has a bin price of $EVIL

Garou: Mark of the wolves, Magician lord and Gunlord would be most interesting games to me... but I should probably start with a 161-in-1 to get a lot of games going on initially.

Basically, what I am asking is... where should someone who never had a neo geo start with regards to starting a neo geo project?

Consolized mvs certainly in the long run (analogue interactive make the creme de la crop) but if you're anxious to get started, the it's fairly cheap to get hold of an mvs board and a supergun. You probably already have an atx psu to use.

On another note, those 160-in-1's are blasphemy! Newly produced bootlegs to cash in on mame roms ;) SNK do still exist and still own their licenses!

Whichever joystick you get can work with either.

I have a spare supergun from arcadeforge.de (the mak strike) that I can lend you, with a buy perogative, if you like that solution. Bear in mind the supergun solution also opens the posibility of playing other arcade pcb's.

Hi Mendel,
I'm in the process of doing exactly the same thing. I decided to go for the MVS, mainly because both the system and the games are considerably cheaper. I've picked up an MVS-1FZ board for relatively cheap and a 161-1 Cartridge. I chose the 1FZ because it's one of the smallest PCBs. I also got a small switch-mode power supply from evilbay (Article No: 310405195106), which is not just small and silent, but also a bargain at just €15. The PSU can supply 5V @ 8A and 12V @3A, so more than enough for an MVS. (It also supplies -12V @ 500mA, so it could be used for an Amiga too :)) The Joystick / Buttons also came from evilbay.
My plan is to build a small box that can sit in front of the TV, with one set of controls mounted on the box itself. For player 2 I intend to add a 15pole socket to connect an AES Joystick when required. For now I just intend to have a SCART output, but HDMI will be added later.
Unfortunately, due to extremely little free time, it's still just a pile of components.

Bryce.

personally I would go the emulation route with a nice small ITX board. You can buy silent power supplies so that the noise would not be an issue. As for the fan on the heatsink I am sure you can go the water cooling route and then you have no noise.

Install something like Kwaks or even MAME with your OS and your done and I think it would be cheaper than getting the real thing.

@slk486

Yeah I guess I could lend the amigakit 300W atx psu from my tower A1200 for testing.

That said, the mak strike alone isn´t very useful, I would still need to get some kind of arcade board or mvs board and a controller of some kind.

Does yours have some case/enclosure? Would you happen to have any other spare parts?

Hmm, I guess you have a point there. Didn´t actually even realize SNK is still alive! No need to get a huge collection immediately either. Maybe it´s nice to get 1 game initially and then very slowly make a collection. I could take it as a hobby :)

Hmm, yes, I actually do have a mame running on my pc... but for some reason, I find that these things only become exciting with real hardware. Otherwise I would be running Amiga, Spectrum and SNES with emulators too instead of... well instead of being in this very forum at all, I reckon :)

One thing that you should bear in mind is the cost of AES games vs MVS games. Collecting for the AES is prohibitively expensive, whereas the exact same game can be had on an MVS for a fraction of the price. Add a uni bios chip to the MVS and you can even play the games in AES mode if you wish. I have the CD, MVS and AES and split my collection across the three formats based on cost and availability.

This is good advice :) I personally like the AES just because of the way it looks, but when it comes to the time where I want to buy games like Metal Slug etc I want to try and either get an MVS converter, a CMVS or a Neo CD. There is also the Converted games route (where the cheaper MVS game is taken and the chips are swapped out to an AES game cart), but these are still quite pricey.

If you want the system with the most games and cheapest then you should go with CMVS.

I´ve gone through a failed attempt at buying a cmvs from ebay as the seller ran into some problems.

So right now, I´m looking at this Analogue CMVS and thinking... should I... could I... It looks way too nice and seeing as I´m getting some money back to paypal from the failed ebay purchase, it´s not *that* much more added to the cost. :shhh:

It might make it just in time for christmas if I order now.

I have some of the best arcade memories of playing Neo-Geo systems around 1990 or so. I mean it would be sweet to have one of my own but it is comforting that the emulators for the system are (as far as my memory can tell) nearly perfect.

Good luck with your build Mendel!
