Very true. The company I work for had some injection molds machined years ago and the cost was truly an eye opener. As such you can understand why Phil expressed his doubts there would be enough interest in the A600 to make the design and tooling costs viable, which is where the minimum of 800 units at 69 EUR numbers came from. Having said that, I would personally be VERY surprised if there was not considerably more interest in replacement A600 cases to move 800 units. The A600 was quite widely sold in the UK, Europe and Australia and sold in greater numbers than the A1200. I would think the A600 is the second most common Amiga after the A500, and with a case that historically breaks clips by looking at it the wrong way (unlike the more robust A500), I dare say there are a lot of less than perfect A600 cases out in the wild that could do with replacing..... time will tell.Getting plastic molds made is serious business indeed, tens of thousands of dollars in tooling before you even see one part made. Sometimes it is worth it; I had the a1200.net transparent A1200* case and was very happy with it, definitely a quality product. I was not aware of how much harder than a PCB it is until I began to look into having proper Amiga keycaps made on Cherry MX stems. Around the same time I began following a guy on kickstarter making C64 keycaps, and over about 3 years I watched him struggle to get it done as suppliers flaked out or got things wrong and didn't want to fix them, mis-shipped and generally made his life complicated. Was very thankful I had not started down that path!
(*Can't call them A600 or A1200 in the UK of course, beware the Amiga Kit trademark trolls)
Considering that it's been 5 years, if any of your prospective CD32 Special Edition A1200 case/keycap customers drop out (or have passed away in that time) then please get in touch. Thank you.Hello everyone,
Phil here from a1200.net.
I'm stepping into this discussion to offer some insights and then I'll leave the stage.
Firstly, I want to touch on the initiative Jameson took to kick off this thread, shedding light on the journey of undertaking such projects.
Secondly, I'll briefly engage with the skepticism that invariably accompanies our discussions, as is tradition
1) On the Interest Gauge for A600 Cases Initiated by Jameson
Responding directly to Jameson's inquiry, based on our team's previous discussions over the last four years.
Key Points:
Please note, the journey has been challenging, especially with the delays and the impact of the pandemic. As a collective of enthusiasts with day jobs and families, not a formal company, we've felt these challenges acutely. And more!
- Our priority is the completion and shipment of all A500 cases and 95% of keycaps (at least) to our backers before thinking of any new product.
- Note : A case project from 2019 is on hold (not A600) - as is the development of the mechanical keyboard.
Jameson's initiative to gauge interest for A600 cases, while appreciated, isn't officially endorsed by us. We believe in the community's ability to take on such projects with the proper licensing. Also note this : Plastic is heavy industry. Not PCBWAYYYYYYY type of things were you get things done in a couple weeks like people think it is.
Regarding A600 Cases:
We've deliberated in the past, notably around 2019, but given the immense effort required from design to delivery learned from A1200/A500 case & keycaps, we keep focusing our resources on fulfilling existing commitments.
Any other venture, if any, will most probably not go through crowdfunding.
2) Addressing Concerns and Critiques
We're aware of the frustrations regarding the A1200 CD32 case delays (waiting for CD32 keycaps in fact), now reaching a five-year mark.
These delays stem from a cascade of challenges including the pandemic, Brexit, and supply chain disruptions, leading to unprecedented setbacks and increased costs across the board.
It's important to clarify that we're not diverting focus or resources away from our commitments. Our efforts to fulfill rewards and manage final production runs are ongoing and communicated through updates.
The team understand the concerns raised but contributors need to follow updates.
This thread has to stay on main topic moving forward.
Myselft and team we do appreciate your understanding - if you have further questions go ahead to contact us directly.
Myself and team will not answer any other remarks on this thread, concernain our current prod.
I'll keep reading though...
Cheers
I'm assuming THE Amiga Maxi will be an A600 shaped machine so just use that shell!Another Option is to build an Adapter for the A1200 Keyboard to A600 Mobo.. The A600 Mobo fits well in the A1200 case
Ok, a new red, blue, yellow and grey case for A600 would be really great..
I don´t believe that the case including Keyboard will fit.. Is the build in Keyboard from "maxi" an USB one? Then the sum600 adapter will work? Do you have a link?I'm assuming THE Amiga Maxi will be an A600 shaped machine so just use that shell!
