Nintendo seem determined to kill their stock price.

They've now had the awesome idea of taking the 3D feature AWAY for this latest handheld and also to design it as a single hunk of plastic (eg it doesn't fold).....madness :double

Nintendo unveils 2DS

Going to wait for the 2DS Lite (With new clamshell design!) :D

I saw this announced today and couldn't believe it. Anyone else look at it and instantly see the Wii U controller in this design?

Who is going to want to carry this hulking great thing around with them? The whole point of the original DS was how small if folded up for your packet, and also the clever dual screens. Having the screens angled to use the bottom screen with the stylus was how it was meant to be, not this!

No, don't be silly, you should wait for the 2DS Lite XL

Yes it's very strange, I think Nintendo are going a bit nutty.

They are in a lot of trouble with the Wii U as well because they haven't managed to get much of an install base built before the PS4/XBOX One launch.

Ah yes the XL :D

Seems like they're trying to boost sales in the handheld market to make up for the Wii Us poor sales.

The design of the thing stinks. It's twice the size it should be due to the lack of clamshell design and it looks like a kids 'play and learn' style toy. I can see many on ebay with scratched and damaged screens in about 6 months time. :picard

Taking the 3D out of the 3DS was the best thing they could've done for it; it was like trying to play a game on those "holographic" cards they used to put in cereal boxes.

The no-folding thing, though? No thanks.

The 3D scared me at first too, but after buying one I never turn the 3D down.

EDIT: Then again, all your old-guy eyes might not be what mine are. ;)

I found the 2ds to be a nice idea. However, I would get the 3ds for myself. BUT the kid would get a 2ds (if the price was right), because I've repaired DS'es well over 10 times due to my nephews and nieces killing them off one by one. Hinges was problem number one.

It a good idea, to gather in a lower segment, but at the price point it's way too expensive - especially compared to the 3ds.

I know someone who's son plays a lot of 3DS and his eyes sort-of how do you say... wander? ...He down-right looks "special-needs" to put it bluntly.

I didn't associate it with the screen at first, but when I tried it myself I felt that the technology needed improving.

3D is certainly better than 2D though in my opinion. My feelings are that Nintendo were getting there, but they have chosen to give up instead.

I think that Nintendo had it made with the Wii. They proved that the sharpest resolutions and powerful processors aren't required to lead the market.

My feelings with the Wii U are that the screen should have been introduced as a controller replacement for the Wii, and the updated hardware would run the same games but with graphic enhancements where possible.

This way, games would play their best on the latest hardware, but people that aren't sensitive to or bothered by slower frame rates or lower resolutions could maintain their current hardware.

After all, companies are always complaining about how much money they lose on the hardware. Why continue releasing expensive hardware?

This is coming from someone who still plays Streets of Rage 2 on the Megadrive.

I'm with Moijk on this one, when I have a look around the local car boot 90% of all DS have hinge problems, loose screens or fail calibration,
common issues Nintendo tried to fix

in our house,
Gameboy advanced (missing battery cover) common issue.

Gameboy advanced SP (hinge a bit loose) but no cover to loose.

original DS (broken hinge) (Very Common),

DSlite OK but hinge not very stiff.(got replaced as touch screen failed to calibrate) common issue on this model

3DS, (wifes) , no issues atm I like this model seems very well built, novelty take 3D pictures and I like Pilotwings, Hinge as good as day one.

OT, I hope they do a PilotWings for Wii U, loved the game since Snes. (I bought a N64 at release for Mario64 and Pilotwings) :)

As I have said in other places about this no ones forcing you to buy it so why the butt hurt ?

I can see where they are going with this as its aimed more to the kiddies and the 3DS is the adults version with added 3D in the games.

I am not a Ninty fanboy but of late too many people are jumping on the Ninty beating band wagon and its just sad.

People are moaning about them purely because they found themselves with an instant cash generator (Wii) and rode on the back of it's success for too long without doing much new. And they haven't delivered anything revolutionary with the Wii U, and it doesn't have any outstanding first party games yet.

People have become disillusioned.

I can however also see what they were trying with the 2DS, and this is backed up by the post above listing the hinge issues with most of the previous DS models, mostly because children don't like to sit still to play or take great care with anything. And it might work in regard to holding to to abuse by the young, but it is just too big and bulky to take with you.

It probably will still sell ok though. And Nintendo could actually try to grab more of the electronic my first computer style early learning market if they were smart. It could open up a new area for younger children that the original DS hasn't grabbed yet.

Aww, its a shame to take it this way.

All it is is free feedback, and is useful to them if they listen.

Nintendo could have gone the way of Sega after the double sale-fail with both the N64 and Gamecube if it wasn't for the Gameboy's success.

My concern is that with the 2DS, they're going up against the android market with something too similar. They would be better advised to jump aboard and release games on android handsets if they want to go 2D.

If their hardware is still very different, then why not release the Nintandroid tablet? An android compatible version of their hardware.

Well, knowing Google; they'd undoubtedly rinse Nintendo for every asset they are able to get their claws on.

Maybe Nintendo have an ace up their sleeve. Who knows?
