I´ve just about had it now. No communications for 10 days from one seller and no amibay activity after june the third from another seller. Both have my money and of course I can do nothing but try to find alternative ways of contacting them. One I found his ebay account and got one reply basically claiming he´s been sick... which he could be but all the time he is getting positive feedback to his ebay account for his activity there... the other guy apparently is just busy with navy or something. I still have hope of getting my items for both of them but this is really it. I will no longer pay anything as a gift ever again. It´s just too much trouble trying to find these people and get any kind of communication going on.

As a very good contrast though, I did have a very positive experience recently too with a seller going out of his way to contact me, finding my email address even during the amibay downtime to keep me updated on an item I had already paid for before the downtime.

So yes, there are some very true Amibayers here but then there are people getting sick, people getting busy and people just disappearing, paying as a gift is impossible unless the seller is a very very well known person here.

And yes, I realize there is that lenghty notice up there above my post about the same thing even as I write this... just letting some steam out and sharing my experience. :coffee:

edit: today I have one seller telling me he´s shipping today and I have apologies from another so maybe things will turn out for good. :)

We are to here to help you if you wish :)

Yeah, you guys are great!

Both the negative cases I talked about above... I wait until the end of this week and I will PM someone of you mods about it if there is still no comms from sellers

I know it's hard but you do have to be understanding and patient as you never know what's going on over on their end. Most people mean well but life has a way of messing with stuff.

If its a lot of money, don't pay by gift.

I agree, don't mind for small amounts to use "gift" but for larger purchases I won't :) I will just pay the paypal fees

As a buyer those fees are for my protection, if I don't receive the item after a certain amount of time I can start a dispute, followed by a claim.

yes mendel mate only pay gift if the seller has plenty of good feedback and only under say £10-20 no more

I have only had 1 issue in over 350 transactions on Amibay, 98% of purchases I paid 'gift' but I followed one golden rule.

I do not buy from '0' feedback unless I can collect in person

If it's too good to be true (i.e the zero feedback guy selling something uber cheap)

Then it probably is.

I gifted Mr Fitz £150 once

But yeah rule of thumb use "gift" at your own risk.

Most people gift me, even for some very large transactions but I always give buyers the option to send as gift or add 4% to cover fees

I don't trust people with so much feedback - it's too good to be true. Something fishy is going on...

I've had someone disappear for months from here, but I was patient, realizing life gets in the way, and he probably wasn't ignoring me on purpose. In the end I found his email address and contacted him. Promptly got a reply and got my money back because the items were lost in the mail. He had just assumed everything was fine and hadn't been logged in for a long time.

Be patient, but persistant :)

@ Mendel

Would you like me to contact my good friend, the detective "Merlock Holmes".....?

Lately, I have decided to just "give" an extra 5% to help the seller with the paypal fees and just mark the payment honestly as 'Goods" - This way everyone is happy and if something happens, we are both covered. I look at it as a common curtisy,-even if the seller does not request it.

Very interesting thread

I always send payment as a gift, because I hate putting my money in ebay/paypals pocket  but when selling: I'm a little uncomfortable with paypal fees because the person could easily 'just' claim the money back.

I realise the vast majority on here are pretty honest and like myself: view the actually act of exchanging money: as a mere exchange/form of 'beer tokens' to fund the next bit of Amiga kit  but no doubt there are some 'just looking to make a quick buck', who will disappear.

Good feedback makes me feel 'safe' in the deal, but low or none! I avoid, unless it's a small value item.

I do agree about how it can sometimes be 'tricky' to find the time to pack/post an item. (especially if the wife is moaning in your ear).

I'm wondering, would it be possible to ask for a certain amount of feedback, to over ride the 'first come, first serve' rule?

I give low feedback as much opportunity as the users with high feedback. Gotta take a chance sometimes.

My 1st sale on here for example was a lifetimes worth of retro consoles, he got a bargain through taking that chance and to help the trade happen, I shipped my items 1st.

Wow gouldin, shipping items before you're paid, for a guy that has no feedback? You risk taker you :p

But Fitz, the local ninja, yeah we all trust him

Generally anyone with good feedback on here can be trusted with a gift to honour an arrangement. Somethimes life gets in the way and things get delayed, but the people on here that have good levels of feedback, I'd trust, no issues whatsoever.

Justin sent me an A1200 with ram upgrade first and I was a 0 feedback user. He said try it out m8 and send me the xbox after you have tested it. This was like first day first post job, Justin is a legend as well.

I been quite happy with all my transactions over the last year, and all but one was as gift.

Amibayers are good people to buy from, and yes, life does most certainly get in the way.
