well i will always reccomend a 15w pencil iron to any one not overly confident.
30w/40w irons are useable when you have a bit more expiriece. but mostly people tend to burn traces with those when they arent used to soldering..

One of these is perfectly fine.
http://dstretail.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=322_327&products_id=6660

they are inexpensive and have a nice small tip you can probably find one at a local hardware store for a little bit less than that.

it is possible that you have 5053 bios installed so that would mean i can prep a hard disk for you if you wanted me to do that.

The hard modded board will be fine like that. as a part of sheer luck and ignorance MS managed to put the caps in a reasonably safe place on the boards in the early versions. so the damage generally looks a lot worse than it is. "not safe enough that they didnt move the things to a totaly diferent sopt on a 1.6 and changed the type of cap used)

But it is a definate need to remove the things asap. Where as the area they are in isnt overly critical the damage can spread to near by components. (namely a transistor and a few other smd components) and in extreme cases it can eat through the board entierly.
but usually it just looks worse than it is.
once you neutralize it and clean up the area there should be nothing to worry about.

Sounds like what happens when I solder so I'll definitely go for one :D

That would be great if you could prep a drive. I'll PM you regarding price :)

Thanks again.

hey im gonna quote you £22 total for postage hdd + prep.
im basing that on expecting postage to be £6
if postage is less il refund.

making the drive now And i will check this post tomorrow and later.

i will be leaving the house in the mid-late AM so if you want your drive in the post let me know if the quote is ok with you before i leave.

I am now offering
a modchip + 160gb hard disk prepped for £25+ postage.
(thats a massive saving of £1! compared to buying one at a time!) lol sorry about the minimal saving..

i still offer the install service too. but i do charge like £3 to solder in a chip, and then the postage gets pretty high sending an xbox both ways.
so doing it your self would probably save you more than £10 compared to sending me the consoles, (depending on your location)

chips are factory sealed with lpc header. no rebuild board but i prefer a wire rebuild personally any way.

the chips come preflashed with an old bios.
but they will let you access the hard disk you get with it.
when you do
the 1st thing you would do is go to
admin tools
file explorer
E:\
Hexinst
Default.xbe

a new window will pop up and you select
modchip\tsop flashing tools.

you should then go and select:
256k bios 1.0-1.5
Evox M8+
I know it says 1.0-1.5 but 1.6 xbox users can use that bios.

when its done flashing you will have full access to the hard disk.
(if you dont flash you will be stuck with pre lba48 support, and wont see the full drive)

if you had any questions about any of the process you could just pm or email.

I added this clip for a diferent forum. Shows the basic soldering method for installing the LPC pin header.
I really doubt any one here really needs this video clip... But seeing as i added it els where for the same advert here it is.

Please note. I do have some colourful language,
I am using a dead mother board.
I decided to use the cheapest soldering irons money can buy to demonstrate as i really dont think any one who has spent good money on soldering irons will want to watch my clip.

It is the most minimal and basic amount of soldering education. i dont cover cleaning the tips tinning the tips.

all i do is show 1 method i see people use that will not work.
show 2 diferent thickness of solder.
2 diferent powered irons "40 and 15"
demonstrate why flux is awesome sauce for soldering.
basic use of a desolder braid.
and obviously i demonstrate the correct way to solder the pins to the board.

it really is very basic.
the reason it is very basic?
because that is the lvl of skill needed to solder the lpc in place.
"PROVIDED YOU USE A 15W IRON THIN SOLDER, AND FLUX"
