It really annoys me when people think that they have a right to post their opinion about people with whom they disagree with as if they are fact.

I don't mind people expressing their opinions in the slightest. Even if they have an opinion against my own existence, but when they express these opinions as fact then they run a high risk of them being wrong and upsetting people.

I feel like it cheapens the forum, because by serving an individual that only cares for themselves is like supporting a decay within the community.

In a recent thread, I was accused by a seller that I insulted them and was trying to ridicule them, when I had already implicitly stated that I had no intention of ridiculing them or attacking them in any way.

I would like to see more care used to separate opinion from fact, and invite others to share their stories, because it would make me feel better and hopefully make everyone with the same gripe feel better too.

I hate being told that I'm being intentionally unfair when I'm not.

Doesn't everyone?

...and relax

I am not entirely sure those are the same thing.

Obviously someone called you out on something you said and they took offense to it. From their perspective it was an attack, from yours it wasn't. I don't think this is an opinion vs fact issue. More like a miscommunication/misunderstanding issue.

I think we need to keep in mind this being a worldwide forum with folks from all around the globe that there are going to be times when things we say might be misconstrued the wrong way. Simply apologize and move on.

English isn't everyones first language, ya know?

My opinion:

These rant threads, not this in particular, are really not constructive.
In fact the hole rant-sub forum shouldn't exist.

This is a hobby site for geeks of different degrees (all proud of it), and should really just be about trading, advices, show and tell and other small talk.

I see all these 'behavior' discussions, but they lead to nowhere.
We are all very different people, and what seems cool some, will insult another.

Just let it be, Nicolas, and let's keep Amibay a friendly forum, without the agitated discussions.

I'm suggesting that it should have read, "I feel that you are trying to ridicule me" instead of "you are trying to ridicule me"

I want to support Amibay as a friendly forum. That's why I made this thread.

I may be upset, but I feel that I'm making a valid point.

It's possible that the people responsible don't know that they're upsetting people, and if I was such a person then I would prefer to be educated.

I don't want to upset people, especially through ignorance, and so I think that other people don't either.

We're taught about opinion and fact at school.

I'm fully aware of this, and take this into account. If a person can understand words such as ridicule and insult, then I don't see why they can't take more care over their use.

lol so the other person is ignorant?

How about you link us to what was said so we can determine this for ourselves?

Otherwise this seems kinda one sided.

Almost like you wanting us to take your "opinion" as fact.

@nicholas.jj.taylor

The thing to remember is that we are not all native English speakers.

Expressions and thoughts are sometimes translated from one language to another and some meaning can be lost in that translation.

Even my English is not excellent as anybody that reads my posts will see now and again

As such we shouldn't take everything to heart and sometimes should allow a little leeway in what people are trying to say

"Opinions are like bum holes, everyone has one" and they are all different, so you just have to learn to live with them. Facts tend not to be different in my experience.

Trying to quote opinions as facts leads to flame wars and trolling, neither of which are tolerated here, so the best course of action is this:-

"Unless you are absolutely sure of your facts, the best thing to do is keep your opinion to yourself".

 I really do agree with this, but I really feel that expressing the difference between fact and opinion an important skill to learn.

I really do sympathise with the difficulties of learning a secondary language, but in this case I had been complained about without even being listened to. I was the one being misinterpreted and subsequently slandered.

I feel that the truth was disregarded as unimportant.

That thread that you are referring to, was closed by me after I felt that it was starting to change in tone and intent, especially after reading your post.
Also, to clarify, I am a natural English speaker, and I thought the tone and expressions you used in your post were likely to be perceived as a personal attack. Hence why I brought it up in the staff area. After a short discussion, it was decided that it would be appropriate to close the thread, before it became a slanging match.

I'm not the type to engage in a slagging match. I stated in that thread as I have stated here that if you or anyone else took offence to any of my posts then you have misinterpreted my intent.

It might be possible that we are referring to entirely different posts, so it might help to quote it when discussing it with me.

My aim is to use good english in my posts that's both light-hearted and easy to understand. If I have failed at this then please let me know so that I can edit my posts.

It is not my intention to upset anybody.

never use an individual to prove a point thats just asking for trouble as emotions will inevitably creep in

why would u want to edit a post to reflect how u felt some time later

Perhaps the problem lies on your side of this equation...

Having just read 'that' thread I know exactly what side of the fence I'm sitting on that's for sure.

If this thread doesn't stay pretty darned positive, or descends into flaming, it will be closed down, Fact.

could you close this please merlin,i dont think theres any need to leave it open.

I'm not really sure there's a positive spin on this one either :)

I agree.

The point has been made and replies posted.

It's now time to digest and reflect on the comments made.
