This isn't so much a whinge I suppose, but more of an appeal to maybe spread awareness

:soapbox:

When I receive boxes in the mail, I remove the tape and addresses for use another day

My problem is that this isn't always an easy task :overactor:

I want to appeal to more people to pack in a way where I hope that my packaging may be reused:

  • Using just enough tape (this also avoids wasting your tape) :wooha:
  • Writing the address on a separate piece of paper and taping into place
  • Using clean materials :double (should go without saying really, but I've received some shocking things in the mail )
  • Using sturdy materials i.e. a sturdy cardboard box

Tape only needs to be used to seal and secure. Understood, heavier items may require more tape.
Unpacking tip: A knife is a handy tool to remove a lot of tape in one go :butcher

Removing tape is important as even if I don't plan to reuse the box, I will recycle it, and most recyclers insist that paper is free from non-pulp based material :nono:

I'd be interested to hear other people's ideas too

My aim will be to compile them together in a small blog-post covering packing tips for packing newbs :thumbsup2:

One thing I would mention is not using too much tape on bubble wrap, in cases where it's necessary to use tape on it. Bubble wrap's a good candidate for re-use, as long as it's not the ultra thin stuff that tends to get battered really easily, but tape can tear up even the good stuff.

Excessive tape irritates me a bit too. Here is my tip - For taping bubble wrap, use masking tape, just a few strips to keep it in place, infinitely easier to remove for reuse than wrapped round and round with parcel tape.

i chuckle to my self as i use mucho tape thinking. "this will be fun to open"

/mental note. When shipping items to Nicholas.jj.taylor wrap item in multiple bubble wrap layers (each one combed with thick brown packing tape), dusty bin bags, crumbling foam chips, rolled up german newspapers and put in multiple boxes like a Trojan horsie.

but that inconveniences your customers. I suppose you think that's okay?

thats ok.
i like these kind of emails...

Hi.
Just to let you know that the card arrived today (Saturday). I have got to say, that was some of the best packaging I have ever seen. The card has been installed, and I just got Crossfire working (finally). So thank you for sending me the cable, it was really nice of you.
Just got to convince the wife now that I need a new PSU.

Greetings from the southern end of Wales :)
It's been a pleasure.

Regards.

bullet proof. withe extra tape for good measure.

but, i really do like to think of the person opening it when i tape them up lol. it does make me chuckle.
And if i dont think i can throw it across the room and it would survive, then it probably isnt packed well enough for the couriers lol.

I do re use boxes and so on. its just good practice,
but i would rather not be able to reuse it and my items arrived safe than be able to send the broken mangled items(s) back to the seller in pristine packaging materials because they didn't think you needed quite that much tape

Well, if they like to be inconvenienced then you're totally right. That is indeed okay.

You're laughing at his expense and he loves it.

haha I'm joking! I do sometimes go a little OTT on packaging (not annoying to open though ;) ) - but I'd rather items get to people in a condition it left me (too many horror stories about couriers who don't give a damn!)
