I know this site has rules for posting sales items and I like how they work and are enforced. One thing that I wonder is that a lot of sellers ask for buyers to pay by Friends and Family or to add a percentage to cover PayPal fees. As far as I know (I read and reread their rules not long ago) it is against PayPal (Canada) rules to do this. I know that rule is not an AmiBay rule but why is this allowed? Do buyers know that they lose all buyer protections when they use the F&F payment option?

Yes buyers know that. You would be silly to agree to forego the questionable protection offered by Paypal if the seller is new or has zero feedback - but who has not heard of a brick being shipped in place of valuable stuff, or a buyer simply claiming a thing never arrived, and Paypal making an arbitrary decision with no recourse? As for Paypal's rules they screw you so hard with exchange rates I don't much care, and would say it is up to the buyer and seller.

In regards to the exchange rate you can change it from PayPal to the card issuer exchange rate you just have to remember to do it because each payment always transferred to PayPal exchange rate as a default. I do it all the time when making payment for euro items.

when you get to this section on the PayPal app tap the bit Ive circled

this will take you to this screen where you select card issuer

We always recommend that buyers pay with protection

Usually if sellers except this the buyer pays the PayPal fees

Read this.

OK, so sellers do it against PayPal rules but AmiBay doesn't enforce it "by proxy". <--- stated in a most neutral tone.

We suggest that all buyers use a protected payment method.

It's up to the individual if they follow that advice or not.

Is there a PayPal rule that states not to pay as family and friends when buying something? Didn't know that..

I am not sure it's a paypal "rule" as such - but I haven't looked very hard - in some or maybe all areas business accounts can't receive f&f payments (that's not a rule, it means they simply can't be paid that way), but most people are trading here as private individuals.

Paypal's Friends and Family option is there primarily as an easy means to transfer money to and from your friends and your family - hence the name.

Sellers (and quite a few buyers too) prefer it because of it's ease of usage, however it does not stop the buyer to ask for the "goods and services" option instead. In that respect, the buyer is obligated not by the seller but by Paypal themselves to pay any extra fee's on top. (+4% IIRC). This basically insures your money against scammers plus returns your money in case of loss of item during shipping amongst other things.

Any reputable seller on here guarantees the item for sale is fit for purpose (unless otherwise stated) and should be more than happy to refund the amount paid in the event of a lost item or an item that arrives DOA (once returned). If not, then why are you here ... hmm?

Actually yes. PayPal states that Friends and Family option is used only when transferring money like for an allowance or giving a gift of money, not for purchasing of goods and services. Also, a seller must not ask, or have as condition of sale, the buyer to pay the fees associated with the sale.

I never said that. The rule is that a seller must not ask, or have as condition of sale, the buyer to pay the fees associated with the sale.
Umm ... Nope!

Accurate and detailed listing
Your listings should be clear and honest and avoid ambiguity wherever possible. Providing proper descriptions and photographs will help your sales. You must provide as much information as you can, also stating terms and conditions of sale.

Recommended conditions are:

What payment methods you accept
Where in the world you will ship to
Shipping charges

Up to the seller what methods of payment is acceptable. As long as it is clearly stated in the advert, it's all good.

<edit>
I thought you were referring to rules here. My bad

I've known businesses in the EU to charge for PayPal fees so it might not apply to all countries.

On your very first post you say that this is against PayPal rules that you have read and reread.
That's why I asked.

Yes, I should have included that specifically when selling an item or service that the seller cannot ask the buyer to pay with Friends and Family.

Most sellers here are private individuals but a commercial seller shouldn't really, for invoicing purposes be using friends and family payments but that's a whole other issue.

The business seller...
Applies to both businesses and individual (non-business) sellers. Again, according to the PayPal Canada rules. So may be different elsewhere.

Regardless, I was just a bit confused that here on AmiBay there is such a comprehensive and effective rules set for buying and selling but that the PayPal Friends and Family thing was kind of being ignored. And, again, I understand that it is a PayPal rule. So it is left up to the buyer and seller to work it out. (y)
