I'm not 100% sure about this but I thought that using the gift option to buy goods was illegal? ...think I read it on a guitar website.

I never knew that you were not covered if you send money by gift (need to read up some more), but surley the easiest way to go is for the seller to automatically add the fees to the final price? or am I missing something, to be honest I have bought loads of stuff from this site payed by pay pal gift and never had a problem, but theres always a first time 
thats what i usualy do as stated in my previous post i estimate the final fee and then say > "paypal gift = £64 or pay pall purchace goods = £67" Im never really 100% sure on what the fees really are but as far as i can see £3 covers them when its an item of £55-£65
I wasn't aware of the hassle that gift can bring either. I was simply following the pattern that I had seen here on Amibay.

Do none of you use ebay? If a buyer opens a case saying an item never arrived / it wasnt as described / it doesnt work / you get the idea, the resolution centre will always give them their money back no matter what the seller says. The whole system is geared up to shaft sellers because of the actions of a few scammers. This might be more of a comminity but at the end of the day its money and people you dont know and most likely never will, temptation often overcomes even the most honest person.
So you either have it secure for the seller with PP gift or the buyer has all the power to rip the seller off using normal PP. If im the seller i know which way it will be going to work and when i'm the buyer I will only buy expensive items off people with proven track records.

I would not add it to the price because if it's in your country paypal may
not charge a fee thats how it is in the USA with gift..
I always check the tic that I will pay the fee for gift since it has been no
bigger then 70 cents for me..
Also remember that the gift fee is nothing like the goods fee..

LOL My kids have lost count of the number of gift vouchers that haven't appeared in the post... I suspect it is more lazy tight wad relatives sending nothing and then blaming the good honest posties

I opened a paypal account years ago to buy on ebay and tied it to my credit card. I do not sell on ebay. I make a purchase, I click PAY and I pay the credit card bill when it comes; a simple transaction. Paypal has periodically demanded that I register my checking account and give them free access and I have told them repeatedly that nobody sticks their hand in my pocket but me.
The first time that I tried to send 'Paypal as gift' they told me I could not use MY credit card. I was told that in order to use gift I had to sign up for THEIR credit card at 30% interest, register a checking account and give them free access to it so they could go into it any time they liked, pay them a cash advance fee, transfer it to my checking account for a fee and let them then take it out of that account and transfer it to my 'Paypal account' for a fee. Only then could I send a gift "for free".
I told the seller that I would pay his 3.5% transaction fee and send it through as a purchase and he accepted.

I find it if you look at the feedback on the seller it tells you what type of person they are and most here are very trust worthy
If i dont know the person like if they only just joined up then i dont send money through as a gift but if the person as been on here for a good amount of time and has proven time and time again they will deliver the goods and any problems you have they can help you solve then i have no problem in sending it as gift.

Have anyone gotten the message "incoming payment pending review" (or something in that tune) on paypal whilst recieving money as "gift" ?
How in the world would PP be able to dispute that a person meant to send money....with all their security measures.. ?

On some accounts Paypal has a spend and receive limit.
If you as the receiver are near or over that limit this can happen and the same can happen if the sender is near or over their limit.
