Why. Seriously, Why?!?

It made little sense to me on the old home consoles, it makes no sense to me now.

Why when I'm on a modern system, do I have to push the start button to get me to a menu where I can then choose to start the game of my choice?!?
I already know what game I'm playing, I put the disc in and chose it. You forced me to watch who published it, programmed it, made the engine for it with unskippable screens, why force me to have to press a button (and only the Start button!) to get off an unnecessary title screen as well.
Just load to the main menu in one go! Or even better do a GTA and just load to the latest save game file. But at least to the main menu.

the best ones are when they say press start to play, yet any button will work :)

More annoying is when you're forced to do some kind of training or forced mission before you can play the Game, the need for speed Games are annoying for this since the first time you play you really want to get comfortable with the controls and if your on a PC adjust the Video settings to get the same running as you want.

The Codemasters F1 Games (before 2013) forced you to do the young driver training first and anyone remember Driver on the PS1? Damn that garage hand brake turn training was tough lol.

See also:

  • DVD menus and unskippable trailers.
  • Games with unlockable content. (There are eight games here, but you can only play three right now. Keep booting this disc enough times and we might unlock some of the others for you)

Indeed, not everyone has time to grind away unlocking content, there should be at the very least some kind of cheat code you can enter to unlock a game if you just want to have a quick 10 min blast every so often.

And I think all games should have an instant arcade type game mode you can get into, OK this wont work for RPG's and such but then, you don't sit down to play that sort of game when you only have 10 mins before heading out.

Totally this! I only ever play Gran Turismo games using the arcade mode. I don't have the time to invest in playing it properly, I just occasionally want to race around a bit for a few minutes. There's ULC in those games, too, but fortunately I stole my brother's GT3 save, so I have a full garage of cars to use on the arcade mode!

if id spent months making a game , id want you to watch my intro :-)

however i skip them too...

If you gave me a game for nothing, I'd be happy to watch.

My worst one ever was Sims 3 on PS3. It loads for a bit. Title screen with push start appears. So you sit down ready to play, push start, at which point it proceeds to load the game! Push start to load. Awesome.

The original PS1 Driver was brilliant, but yes that initiation mission the the garage was hard... although it did prepare you for the rest of the game.

Regarding pressing START.. it's a precursor from the arcades, nothing more. And on consoles at least I like the feeling of pressing start to initiate a game. Must just be me.

I get mostly annoyed by d*mn tutorials. I'm not daft - I started on Amiga ffs.
Middle tier splash screens are annoying too, but as they are required with the licence I accept them.
The new Killzone really did their utmost to shorten the time to start playing. They mention in an interview that they had to make special arrangements with licence holders to have the splash screens at the end of game instead of preventing you from playing.

Oh, pressing START to actually start the game makes all the sense in the world to me. It's games where you're asked to 'PRESS START' for it to then go and load a menu screen that bug me.

What really grind my gears are that unending splash screens with credits to designers, then the engine of the game, then a splash screen for the video card, then another to related software houses and only then to the game menu!

Good old times when all you saw was a loading bar then the game menu.
