RaspBerry PI question

ive got my son (14yrs old) 512mb PI in a case for Xmas.

He's autisic with aspergs so he for example completed farcry 3 in a day but cant do simple tasks like cut a sausage or tie shoe laces.

i want him to use the novice wheezy but i want the ability of playing movies like xbmc.

i have tried both and both are great.

wheezy auto detects the wifidongle but xbmc does not.

is there anyway to run the desktop (windows style) wheezy with the ability of xbmc for playing movies.

is it possible to dual boot from 16gb SD and pick wheezy or xbmc depending on what you want to do ?? or load xbmc and then exit to a desktop ??

Could you not configure wheezy to autostart VLC (or your media player of choice)?

The Pi's firmware doesn't support dual booting last time I checked. Although people keep asking.

I dont think dual booting is worth trying as you can simply swap out the SD cards.

Have you tried Risc OS yet, esp running ArcEm, it works great, even Elite.

I think your boy will love it

I know your pain, my son has it also. He had to wear a different shirt to school today (For a picture, he's on the Lego robotics team and they won at competition.) Anyway, the change in his routine caused a complete meltdown that lasted half a hour.

Smart, great with computers, he started learning to program in scratch when he was 8, but took him until last year to bother learning to tie his shoes.

He's thirteen now.

Hang in there, maturity seems to help a bit, it did for me.

yup same here, this morning going to his grandmothers he refused to wear his coat it was 6c, his grandmother would not let him in the car until he got his coat, 5 minute meltown and calmed down. hes 14 and over 6ft tall, we are going through the swearing phase atm and any distraction like the pi is good to get him focused. what my son lacks is patience and easily gets frustrated hence the ability in wheezy for a gui video player which im researching atm oxm with gui as hardware decode is required.

i want him to try this himself, but its a very fine line between being to hard and frustrating for him or to easy and bored with it,
