I would definitely use a Mini-itx based PC with an i3 CPU. It's built in graphics would probably be enough for 16bit emulation.

You can get some nice cases for this form factor too, that are really small.

I would definitely use Windows 7 for emulation. No other OS has near to the same level of emulation support.

My Atom dual core netbook on energy saving power settings was enough for 16bit emulation  It did PS1 stuff on full power (And likely would cope with Saturn and other 32Bit era stuff). An Atom mITX system would probably do fine for him TBH. An i3 system would be leaps and bounds beyond fine with plenty of room to spare, and would run most PC games too. :D

But for the price difference it's worth getting an i3, especially for the built in gpu and hyperthreading. An atom would really struggle with things like mame, whereas an i3 wouldn't. It's better to have more processing power than needed, rather than needing to push a system to the max to achieve something.

And Windows is much smoother too. Plus it would make a good media PC, as it's going to be hooked up to a living room tv.

Power consumption is fairly low for i3s too and you can even get passive cooling solutions to reduce noise.

No probs. What you'd be looking at is basically building a PC version of a Mac mini. (With an Atom processor if you don't go the i3 route).

If you want a portable device to do it you could always buy a netbook, too. Any dual core Atom netbook would be enough with 2GB RAM.

EDIT: I agree with Harrison 100%. It's def worth going the i3 route for the price difference, and you get so much more potential for the money, basically the power of a good spec, mid range laptop.

Haswell I3s don't appear to be available yet, but will likely use less power than the current ones, an Ivybridge or Sandybridge will use about 55W. Double it for the rest of your system and add maybe 20% and there's your PSU requirements. Should get by on less than 180W

If your going for a console for the TV the original Xbox. For hand held if you can afford it the Pandora if you cant then the PSP

If your going for a small PC ITX mobo with a good CPU and good built in GFX card and make it at least 2GB minimum.

I would not suggest using a Pi as its very under powered.

Hmm, you're right though it doesnt seem to mention RAM or HDD

Can always email and ask if you're interested in that specific one. I'd build myself personally :)

Hmm, its an Ultrabook spec i3 too (low wattage). Not that that would affect it's performance for your needs.

I'd build one myself personally. The parts are all readily available from online PC component retailers. Including the cases, which often come with PSUs.

Hi.

Hi.

I wouldn't recommand buy a 'small pc' for emulators.
You could use a JXD-7300B portable console which is sold on amibay .
It is powerfull touch and sd memory till 32 GB.
I bought 2 on amibay and I love it.
You got dual hdmi and analog joystick also.
It is even running gamecube emulator but slowly for the moment.
If you need a more 'desktop' thing to play at home with family or friend then I will go for TINYARCADEMACHINES 75-in-1 coin-op machine with 2 TB if roms and emulators and a nice HYPERSPIN HS front end and a possibility to plug more joystick on the back of,it to be able to play at 4 players if you need to as myself.

About JXD 7300 it is quite good but I have to say that Android OS I am not quite familiar with but it is much easier speedier than iOS's....

Cheers and good luck

PS:if you are rich enough you can buy real retro console and plug some new hardware,as everdrive,sdiec,cffa3000,etc.......
