Reliving my Amiga days

Hi all, I've finally taken the plunge and bought myself an Amiga 1200 to relive my Amiga days. However, my last Amiga was the 500, so I am well out of touch with both the hardware and software side.

As I'll generally be using the Amiga for playing mainly demos (love the music and the clever effect (at the time)) and the few games, I don't think there is anything else.

I have a few questions to ask;

1. What do most people use their Amiga for?
2. I believe some games on the 1200 needs something called WHLoad, and it needs extra memory to play them, I was thinking of getting an accelerator card with extra memory, is there any use with the extra speed from the accelerator card?

Would really like to see how others have setup and using their Amiga.

Welcome to AmiBay.

You can do many stuff with Amigas, from programming to games, from music to graphics and multimedia. Whatever you want it's there.

WhdLoad is a special tool which can easily install any game to HD even NDOS disks. It's a great tool to have nowadays. Recommended configuration is 030 with at least 8MB Fast RAM.

You made the right choice with the 1200!!

Games. ;-)
But there's a lot you can do with the 1200...
It's internet capable, there's great music apps, and lots more..

My 1200 is frequently online (browsing mobile versions of Amiga sites and Aminet).

Well, "need" isn't the right word. But "REALLY SHOULD HAVE" is probably correct.
Basically, whdload lets you take games that required floppies (or CDs) and play them from your hard drive. Also, whdload can "fix" games that wouldn't like to work on the 1200 normally (some of the early Amiga games that didn't like the new kickstart, etc..)
If you are going to be using whdload, you really need some RAM. At least 4M Fast RAM will cover almost everything..

Now, if you're going to do that, it might make sense to just get an Accelerator with RAM.
The speed increase is noticeable in a few games. Especially the later FPS games.

If you are DEMO crazy and have deep pockets , then you'll want an 060 accelerator. Some of the really crazy demos (from TBL (The Black Lotus), etc) require an 060.

Wow, many thanks for the prompt replies - Phantom, desiv & Johnim, didn't expect to get a reply so quickly.

I also came to the same conclusion of getting an accelerator card with extra memory than a memory expansion card since the price different is not huge. I doubt I can afford a 060 , probablu 030 will be good enough for me.

Sorry, another quick question.

The 1200 I have bought has the 3.0 ROM inside, is it worth upgrading to the 3.1?

It depends on what you want to do with it..
For mostly running games and demos, I'd say no...

If you want to run WB 3.5 or later, then yeah....

But for just getting an OS (3.0/3.1) and launching games, you should be fine..
