The GBS is suffering from poor upscaling plain and simple. The more expensive units usually don't suffer that moire effect on desktop backgrounds. Heck, the TVs upscaler is doing a better job with the direct SCART RGB input. Amazing considering how cheap the upscalers usually are in TVs. The difference in quality between S-Video and SCART RGB would be more obvious if it was a CRT as it is usually noticeably sharper, with zero color bleed and much purer color rendition. The LCD's scaling is softening the picture quite a bit.

Just picked up an older 26inch Grundig LCD tv, should be a reasonable platform for testing all the inputs I wanted 
native resolution is 1280 x 768 pixels, so not ideal, and I imagine the GBS will look worse because of this 
So, I plan to test the following:
RF
Composh!te (via scart)
SVideo
Scart RGB
GBS to VGA
AND!
RGB to YpBpR
