As some of you may have seen from the Photobooth thread, I recently collected a massive bundle of retro goodies and in among it all was a Sam Coupe with manuals, software, expansion boxes etc. Also in with it was 4 x Spectrum 128k's, a Spectrum +2, Spectrum +2a and a Spectrum +3 - loads of expansions such as romantic robots, floppy drives, +D's etc....
I have so far cataloged over a thousands Spectrum tapes (still adding!), 200 odd Speccy magazines, some CPC stuff (Schneider), Acorn Stuff and I'm still finding stuff.
Anyway, I decided to check the machines out and each of the spectrums worked great (building up to the almighty Sam), played a few games, eventually managed to get the wife off of Joe Blade II (i *really* want to play on that Sam!) so I could play with the Sam Coupe and..... *!@"*&^ thing doesn't work :-(
Beyond devastated was the only way to describe my emotions. I have wanted one of these ever since I didn't take the opportunity to buy one back in the late 80's... it was to take pride of place in my collection, on the shelf in it's wonderful poly's and good condition box (yes, it is THAT complete!). I'm not sure if this post is a rant or me just seeking some sympathy from like minded people but feel free to chime in at any time
It's sods law that the stuff I have the least interest in is working fine and the thing I wanted most of all is dead as a dodo :-(
Anyway, the Sam is being collected by courier tomorrow and being taken to 'The Man' that is most able to fix it (he can fix everything except the custom ASIC chip). He says he's never known an ASIC chip die so there is a very good chance all will be good and we will keep one of these rare machines alive and kicking in the world that is retro. Wish me luck anyway
And back to the spectrum stuff....
It will be getting listed on here as I don't collect Spectrum stuff at all - what would be the best way to list it all? I have already identified some 'sought after' stuff that I know should be listed on it's own - some of it is really niche - eg, about 500-600 rolodex cards with peeks and pokes on them, PD software catalogs, Spectrum club member ship pack, drafts of magazine submissions and so on. That kind of stuff is unusual but not valuable but it is a part of retro history. I suspect the guy I acquired this lot from is either related to the Sinclair mags of the time, a beta tester, a developer, a PD library or maybe was just OCD with a big hint of megalomania when it came to anything Spectrum
Anyway... long post over!
