I've just taken delivery of an SCSI to IDE hard drive setup for an A500..

but the supposed SCSI to IDE adaptor is shown in the pic? The conversion seems to consist of cutting a 50pin scsi cut to IDE dimensions and fitting a 3.5 inch IDE plug on the end!

Then a 2.5 to 3.5 ide adaptor is fitted....

result

The hard drive is buggered and the A500 side car crashes constantly.

with the hard drive connected or not. my scsi drive isn't recognised either.

I must admit i didn't event notice it was a plain old 3.5 to 2.5 inch adaptor until closer inspection.

**********
I've tried the IDE drive in windows and it isn't detected - dead i expect but it does spin up
my 1gb scsi drive isn't detected by the amiga in the this sidecar ...
and the sidecar locks up or gets guru error after 30 seconds or so - maybe poor connection - more investigation needed.

To good to be true my friend, people do not pay that amount of money for conversion prints:(

Sorry to dissapoint you, but if it were that easy, we'd all be doing it.
I fear someone has tricked you.. :(

trying to pull my p****ker i think the saying is.

im staggered to be honest, the original advert had hazy , out of focus photos that didn't show the connections..i now know why.

Wow - that's just... wow. So is this inventory that the guy's selling to order, or just some random hacked-up cable he found in a spares box and decided to flog on evilbay?

Comiserations on the hardware damage :( Hope it can be fixed.

@mjnurney

If you can get hold of an 80-pin SCA SCSI to 50-pin SCSI adapter, I have a 4.5Gb IBM drive here that is going spare.

The adapter is like this one:-

eBay 170403068126 (BIN)

PM me if you are interested.

it doesn't matter where its from to be honest , i just thought id share the joy :-)

Thats just aweful - I'm shocked anyone would sell that

and the ribbon isn't even cut straight :-(

Anyone know what the jumpers do?

i can get it to detect my scsi

unit 0 detected.

but it doesn't boot.

thats just rediculous..
reminds me of all those chinese psu's that are just a block of iron in a box. or the USB pens that are just a old usb cable cut up and glued in to a case..

Something really needs to be done about false advertizing.. Not much aggrivates me more than some 1 lying in an advert! (prehaps you have noticed with my rants)

lets track them down. I have atleast 32 pitch forks and i can make plenty burning torches! Lets get these heathens and give them what 4..
"but talk in to my right ear my left ear seems to have been perforated (re occuring problem from a fight when i was 17) and it slowly gets filled with blood so im 50% deaf in it for the next week or so till its healed enough so i can syringe it better"

Yep unit 0 is the scsi controller and hdd is set as Id 1 and terminated but no go..

I'll have another play tonight...

I ve seen damaged SCSI controllers due to short of TERMPWR + GND...
lets hope these pins are not shorted on this "adaptor", in this case... say bye bye to your controller.... :-(

@xc8

Hopefully by the weekend mj will have an external CD drive that he can hook up to this to check it out

Dave G

Thanks Dave ,

I have another scsi controller for the 500 and I tried that hard drive in this side car. It doesn't detect it, just says not ready .

Maybe a jumper issue ...

Maybe not.

@mjnurney

I'm not 100% about this, but you may need an external terminator on the unit that plugs into the external socket. The jumpers may do this but without a manual, it's just guesswork.

Rkauer may come across this at some point and he may know the answer.

I believe that Macrosystems was a German company; I'll ask over at a1k.org to see if anyone has a manual for this unit.

Thanks Merlin ,

I have only had a quick look but I couldn't find the manual. I'll have a better look tonight.

Thanks all.

And yes macrosystems was German.

Cheers.

44 pin IDE genders do not work on 50 pin SCSI headers. The data lines are very different.
Pin 41 & 42 on the IDE is +5v & pin 42 on SCSI is ground. Not looking very good at all.

Well I have a suspicion that the controller is buggered. It locks up after a few seconds of use and does not find an scsi hard drive.

All I can do is try it some more and check the manual. There could be issues with accelerators or kickstart rom. So at the moment I have my fingers crossed that its not complete scrap.

The IDE hard drive that came with it is scrap , spins up but isn't found by my a 600 ( drive not installed, no hard drive found) or in windows - not detected at all.

More investigation needed.
