Hey guys

I have a few problems I was hoping someone could help with. I have the sd2iec from nkcelectronics, all is working well. But when I use the retro replay to save to it from the c64 itself it always says "Write Protect" so it wont save to it.

The card is not write protected as I can put d64 files on to it from the PC and they play just fine on the sd2iec. Anyone know why this is?

I also want to flash the retro replay with maybe ar6 firmware but I have no idea how, or what the jumpers do on the side.

I followed one page and it all flashed perfect but when I use the replay it has the same old cyberpunk screen. The firmware on this is pretty old as some features are disabled.

Thanks for any help

Cheers

Check that the sd card slot has been soldered properly to the board. I had similar problems with my NKC board and it was because one of the contacts on the sd slot was not soldered to the board. Soldering it fixed that.

NKC were less than helpful when I contacted them :(

Hook up a 1541 and designate it as device 9 ... save to device 9, copy back to SD card using RR's built-in copier. If it still refuses to write, check the SD card and slot

Hey

Thanks guys, it looks like it is the sd2iec. Tried everything and the red light just flashes when it tries to save to it.

I can't use the retro replay to file copy as it has old firmware on it that says currently unavailable when doing certain things. I need to find away to flash it. I have flashed it about 3 times now but I always get the same cyberpunx menu and not the ar6 one. So I am doing something wrong, can't seem to find where I need to set the jumpers.

Cheers

Think I may have found the reason why it never flashed correct before. Seems both jumpers need to be covered. Taking a lot longer this time then last time thats for sure.

Fingers crossed

Sorted, now have Action Replay 6.0 firmware flashed :) Now I can select devices to save to from 8 to 9 I can now save where I get to in a game to the disk drive. So happy now thats all sorted.

@Jimbo:

How did you flash the firmware to your Retro Replay? I've got one too and the copyright text only says Final Replay v0.6. I'd rather also have the AR firmware.

OK I have attached a zip file for you with the files. On the RR you need two jumper things from drives. You need to cover the two pins facing the c64 itself, then the other 2 pins facing the back of the cartridge. Otherwise it won't flash.

Load up the flash program, you have to erase the banks first, its all in the menu so its dead easy. Once the banks are erased, flash rr38ppal.bin to bank 2. Then flash Action_Replay_V6.0_6.0_1989_PAL.bin to bank 1. Again its all in the menu so easy to do.

Even if it goes wrong it is OK, you can't break these with a bad flash, you just keep flashing until it works. For me it went perfect first time around. You just have to make sure you have those two jumpers on.

When its complete, when you reboot and press the freeze button you will have a nice ar6 menu :)

Before I forget, you may get an unknown error when flashing ar6.bin, this is normal, just press space to carry on.

I always keep one jumper on, the one facing the back on the c64 not sure if I need this on all the time with normal usage, but it was on when I got it.

Have fun

Thanks! I take that the files must be on a disk? I tried adding the files to a d64 image but the binaries were also converted to prg. I do have the 1541-III DTV but it powers up from the cartridge port so I can't have it and the RR connected at the same time.

I had them all on my sd2iec as they come in the .zip file. Should be the same from disk as well. If you get stuck I am sure someone can add these to a disk for you and post them. I can post you a disk as a last resort if noone near you can.

Well, if it doesn't work from a real disk and I'm not able to find my Iomega ZIP PSU, then I'll just power the 1541-III from another commodore while it and the RR are connected to the other.

Wasn't so easy after all. Any of the copiers that I have, wouldn't work with the 1541-III. Some of them saw it but didn't know what to do with it. I also doubt that the C64 doesn't have enough memory for load/save. I could try that in C128 mode though.

When I tried running the flasher from MMC root, it couldn't find the binaries from it. I'm going to try again though with an empty card containing only the necessary files.

Not sure, I did this on a c64c, I just used a filebrowser called FB.prg to list and load from the menu. I thought it would be just as easy to load the flasher itself.

The flasher actually loads and runs but when I try to flash something with F7, it won't list any of the binaries and the 1541-III just starts to flash like there was an error or something.

It seems that I need to find a way to get the stuff on a real disk. Either I need to find a copier that works with the 1541-III or I have to setup my C2N232 interface and transfer the files using CBMLink.

Hey

If you look at the -III wiki, it only seems to like certain extensions. I think this is the issue. If you need a real disk for your disk drive (if you have one) I would be happy to send you one.

Cheers

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind, if transferring the files to a disk with the C2N232 interface doesn't succeed. I do have a pretty good selection of C= floppy drives.

Finally success! I managed to transfer the files on a disk with C2N232 interface. From there the binaries were readable. Now I got myself an Action Replay. Boy that disk turbo is fast!

Thanks for all the help, Jimbo! :)
