So I got an A1200. Now what?

Alas am running XP. There's an option to run as an admin, but since I don't have an admin password (never set one up) it won't let me run WinUAE as anything but myself. (This is why I #$@$ HATE peecees, and use Macs instead!)

Finally managed to sort it out. Within HDToolBox, if I click on the one option available to me - Change Drive Type - and click on Define New then Read Configuration, changing the filename to RAM:junk (as spotted here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wSv53nKdFA) it suddenly made all the other options available. Partitioning the 4gb into three areas (Workbench, Files, Storage) and hitting okay didn't work though... gave me an "error 28 on write".

Only issue I have now is that I saw absolutely nowhere to enter the max transfer rate data. Either it's been taken out of the latest WinUAE, or I completely missed it. (Betting on the second.)

So back to windows, nuked the CF card (again) and went through the above process (again) and this time it worked. Hooray!

Now just need to suss out how to transfer my shiny new ClassicWB image onto one of those partitions, and I should be sorted.

best thing you can do with amigaforever is copy the roms folder to where you installed WinUae

if you can`t find someone in the community to let you try the wonder of wb3.5 or wb3.9 then my I suggest you try, we not that bad really :p

Señor Hopalong...

Would love to give 3.9 a whirl, but in all honesty, probably don't need it given that the lions share of my time on this will be playing ye olde games from years gone by? (But if you feel like posting me your CD for evaluation purposes, I won't say no!)

hahahahah post for that proper retro experience

Changing max transfer rate is within the advanced options tab during the partitioning process, you change it to 0x1fe000 and then press ENTER to make it stick. Change it for all partitions.
If you don't do this you will likely fall down at the whdload stage as many games won't load.

Like i said call your primary bootable partition DH1 so that you can find it in dopus and copy your system hdf from its mounted DH0 to your DH1 CF primary bootable partition.

Rename it to whatever you like once the cf card boots ok.

Just like Snoozy said.
It's in HDToolbox.

As long as you haven't copied anything into those partitions, you can still change the MAX Transfer. You don't have to re-partition.
Remember to hit ENTER after you type the new MAX TRANSFER settings, or it won't take.

Closerer and closerer.. ;-)

GAAAAH!

Right. So after taking my time and actually READING instructions for a change, I got my CF card working swimmingly in WinUAE, and when I popped it into the A1200, worked without a problem. Hooray!

Alas, when I started moving WHDLoad games and demos onto the storage partition, it started filling up. Quickly. So being the proactive sort, I ordered myself a 16gb version of the same card, set it up in WinUAE, and chopped it into three partitions - a 2.5gb DH0, a 3.8gb DH1, and the "rest" as DH2, which HDToolbox was only showing as 625mb.

Set each partition up with Smart File System, and formatted each with the SFSformat, as outlined here: http://wiki.classicamiga.com/How_to_install_SFS_onto_a_real_Harddrive_within_WinUAE

Copied ClassicWB ADVSP onto the new DH0, and then installed IDEFix97 onto the CF drive.

Drive runs without an issue in WinUAE, but when I plopped it in the A1200, I get absolutely nothing. Reset the A1200 with the Workbench 3.1 install floppy in there, and sure enough, it sees the drive (well, it sees DH0:, not the other partitions), but in HDToolbox, everything is showing up as I'd expect it to. Each partition is in there, each one is showing as having SFS\00 on there with the mask of 0x7ffffffe, the transfer rate of 0x1fe00, drive sizes are correct (apart from DH2) etc.

If someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong, or if this is destined to fail, I'd appreciate the advice! This is doing my head in!

I'm not 100 % sure! But i think u need a partition smaller than 2 Gb as the boot partition, if you not want to go the route of burning a custom kickstart ROM with upgraded scsi.device, or even using a boot diskette (!) to patch a newer scsi.device module into the system.
You could try using IDEFix on a disk just to see if it boots then.
Just use LoadIDE reset instead of IDEFix command and it should stay resident to be able to boot from DH0:
But maybe it's a bit too much hassle making a boot disk if you don't have readily cable/catweasle or similiar.

Just throwing out some ideas here, i'm sure you'll get it sorted pretty soon though.

John mate, that's exactly what I did, but looks like the culprit is the chubby boot partition as imaga pointed out (and as your guide did too).

Just chopped it down to 1.75gb, and rather stupidly formatted all three partitions (time to install everything... again!) so this should hopefully do the trick.

I owe you both a few pints (in the case of John, a few MORE pints) if it works, and I can FINALLY get a game of Kick Off 2 going.

no worries but i would keep dh0 to 500mb and split the others up mate

:double:double:double:double:double

I'll start again... While I'm doing this, get to work on a step by step tutorial for building a mATX Amiga power supply, willya? Zetr0's is no good to me without the pics!

Alright, last question, promise. Okay, last TWO questions, promise.

1) If all partitions on a 16gb CF (err, 500mb, 3.75gb, and the rest in one 11gb or so) are formatted with Smart Filesystem, do I still need to install IDE Fix?

2) The accelerator in there (Apollo 1230) currently is sporting 32mb of fast ram. Considering 72 pin SIMMs are cheap as dirt over here, I was thinking of maxing it out by ordering a pair of 32mb SIMMs to bump it to 64mb. But is it worth even the minor effort for that? Will I notice any sort of performance bump?

hi

if using sfs and just a cf no other software is needed unless you have an ide splitter

with Apollos they can be picky with ram i know 1240/60s are

i dont think there would be much difference in speed but for demos and applications will benefit extra ram
