I have for sale this Socket 3 Kit.
1. LuckyStar LS-486E Rev. C SiS 496/497 chipset. Socket 3 motherboard
256KB 15ns Cache
Bios updated to the latest version. New programed EPROM.
The original voltage regulator has been replaced with a new one with higher specs to help in overclocking the AMD 5x86 133MHz @ 160MHz and maybe even further for the ones who know and want to do this.
The motherboard has some slight marks from usage and handling but nothing that will hurt you eyes or impede the correct function of it.
2. CPU AMD-X5-133ADZ. Unlike the more common AMD-X5-133ADW the ADZ is more indicated if you OC as it is rated for up to 85C unlike the ADW which has the ceiling at 55C.
The CPU is fed with 3.45V which is the stock voltage so there is no need for a beefier cooling solution @ 160MHz.
The 160MHz have been obtained with a x4 multiplier on a 40MHz bus while the stock settings are x4 / 33MHz.
The setup has been tested for almost a week many hours a day and I had no problems with it.
I have to mention that using the 40MHz bus will mean that the PCI and ISA buses will run at a higher frequency.
PCI 33MHz->40
ISA 8MHz->10
In practice this will mean that in some rare instances some cards, especially video cards will show some anomalies but the odds are low.
During testing I used a run of the mill S3 Trio 64 and an ESS 1688 soundcard and I had no problems. The higher bus speed will instead give you an increase of the performance of the system.
3. For cooling I used the thickest heatsink I had that would fit on the original retaining clip and a New Old Stock Scythe Mini Kaze ULTRA de 40 mm x 40 mm x 20mm 3500rpm fan . The fan is silent and has a great flux of air for its size.
I have to underline the fact that during testing I didn't use TIM on the CPU like it happened many times back in the day (my PC had the same CPU in '96 and it didn't have TIM) and the CPU didn't get too hot. Though if you plan to use this kit on a regular basis I recommend the use of TIM. Apply a thin layer of Arctic MX-4 and you are golden.
4. SIMM FPM de 60ns memory. 64MB. 2 sticks of 32MB. 60ns FTW!!!
5. Serial and parallel cables.
The kit has been tested thoroughly
a) Win 95 OSR 2 install
b) Drivers install
c) Speedsys 4.78, Cache Check, Memtest, Quake, Doom Shareware plus whatever fell into my hands.
d) Ports, slots tests etc.
e) misc
The kit was stable, fast and an answer to the question: What if?
Mention. The only fact that needs pointing is that the voltage regulator gets hot. The original voltage regulator was also very hot and it had a small aluminum heatsink. To help, I replaced the small original heatsink with two bigger ones that are fixed with a thicker screw. TIM was added between the heatsink and the voltage regulator. I used a small 40mm fan to blow towards the heatsinks and the temperature of the voltage regulator dropped massively. So, my recommendation is to ensure a flux of air in that area and you will have no problems whatsoever.
I will include in the package the original heatsink that was on the original voltage regulator.
The kit was stable with 0(zero) Wait States and all the memory settings at the lowest value plus other misc BIOS settings.
What can I add? Well, use it and abuse it! Take me home!
This kit must be seen as an exercise outside the norm. A way to quantify the added performance if such a CPU would'be been officially launched. A pure 486 stopped at DX4 120MHz. You might even experiment with other bus settings but if you would do this you would require a 3dfx VooDoo 2000 3000 on PCI that can handle the increased frequency of the PCI bus. I do recommend though to stick to 160MHz. I also tested a Hercules ET 6000 on the 40MHz bus and all was ok.
To run the AMD 5x86 at 180 or 200 de MHz the requirements change drastically as you would need faster cache chips, a peltier CPU cooling solution and a more stringent screening in regard to the motherboard choice. Who knows maybe this kit has what it needs to be the fastest one!
I for one didn't try to run it past 160MHz
If you so desire you can return the CPU at the default 133MHz just by moving a jumper. Easy as pie!
