Hi all

Having sold off about 15 systems years ago I collect much more concisely these days. I have a good 1200 with 8mb and a 4gb cf, the usual whdload setup. I have a lot of my original software as well. Lately im hankering after a c64 but dont want to use tapes. Are there any options for a whdload type setup? Also I went to the retro revival event in Kenilworth at the weekend and there was a device in the back of a c64 that had vga out, sd card slot, and 2600 emu support, but I forgot what it was called, dont suppose anyone knows of this device? Also anyone know any other platforms that have solid state options available? Cheers

Hi!

How was the event? I was thinking of going as Amibay were offered a stall to sell a few retr0 bits and bobs but after taking costs of fuel, hotel, etc into account I passed up. Was feeling some remorse on Saturday/Sunday for not going!

As for your device, maybe it as Turbo Chameleon?

You can buy them from Amigakit:

If you want something cheaper just to play Games the SD2IEC is a great little device:

There are other options too, the experts will fill you in I'm sure :D

You can see my SD2IEC setup here:

Good luck with your project

Agree completely with fitzsteve. SD2IEC is brilliant, and turbo chameleon is a whole load of other stuff on top brilliant.

Ah fantastic I'll definitely be looking into those, thanks for the replies both. That's the one alright!

The event was nice as it goes, quite cosy but the team competition was hilarious. One round was one member of team a answering as many retro questions before the member of team b completed the first level of super mario on the snes. Another round was Mario kart 64, they both had 2 controllers and every 30s it was paused and a coin flip for each of them decided if they kept or swapped to their other controller, basically taking a major back step. Was fun to watch. The venue was too small for me really, i know it was a mini event but I had to park in Kenilworth main street costing 3.50. I dont think you would have covered costs selling tbh.

Thanks for the info I'll take a good look at those tomorrow.

If you get an SD2IEC you should also get a Final Cartridge III or similar to speed up the loading or it will be painfully slow.

You can also check out the 1541 Ultimate-II. I have one of them and it is very nice to have with the 64 if you like the machine but not the loading times. :)
It has the FCIII built-in as well as other speedloader cartridges, it has a very good 1541 emulation and you can mount files off the MicroSD card or a USB stick. It can also mount other cartridge files, so you could play Prince Of Persia (which is very nice btw). It also has DMA loading for single files which means practically no loading time since data will be copied straight into RAM through the cartridge. It is not particularly cheap though, almost double that of an SD2IEC+FCIII.
