Who has been watching so far?

The first 2 part episode was really good, with very high production values, really good special effects and cinematography. And the intro title sequence and music was different enough but a hint to the original. Good cast too.

Definitely has a faster paced feel and polish closer to the recent films than any of the old series. Also much darker and less "moral of this story" based.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the Federation ship design. I'd seen the concepts and was unsure, but the final designs are really nice.

The biggest hang up for existing Star Trek fans has been the reimagining of the Klingons. It was hard for me to get my head around the new look, and it seems many others thought the same online. But they are still the same blood thirsty war mongers so we may grow to like them. And they still speak the same great guttural language.

But the best so far has to be today's release of Episode 3. That was really good and definitely verging on scifi horror. Not one I could show my son.

I really don't like the new Klingon "look".

They look and talk like they have some sort a physical disability with a retarded speech problem.

They are also being portrayed as less intelligent... They are able to cloak their huge ship, and have beacon light technology, but they don't see a tiny "bomb" being pulled in via a corpse? Really? That's just stupid.

I don't mind how they look. They look Klingon enough for me. But I agree about how they talk. It sounds like they are whining all the time.

I agree I still don't like the look and their speech is not guttural enough. Too high pitched and slurred.

Remember though as a species they have been in space a lot longer than humans and the Federation. Many of their ships, that large one especially, are very old. It was hinted at in showing the flashback. There are also different Klingon casts. The Fighting ones view engineering and science as beneath them. Lower casts do that work.

I'm keeping an open mind about it so far. Back when TNG (my favorite ST series) came out, it was borderline terrible in the first season before it found its stride. (remember how the Ferengi were supposed to be *the* mighty antagonists? Lol). Discovery is okay so far, so let's hope it gets better.

I set my DVR to record the pilot episode, which was the only one airing on broadcast television. I went to watch it the day after it aired and some Oprah Winfrey show had run over and made the episode start about 15 minutes late. I skipped to the end of my recording and sure enough, it cut off during a scene.

Because of this, I haven't watched any of it yet. Other than the new Star Trek, there's nothing on the CBS streaming service that I want to watch. I'll wait until the season is done, get a free trial to the CBS service then binge watch them. It should be easy enough to avoid spoilers until then.

I hope everyone continues to enjoy it!

I haven't watched it yet but I've seen the Netflix trailer. I'm an Amazon Prime sub and I'm not planning to switch any time soon.

Don't like the new Klingons much, they look like a different race with those huge heads.

As for Star Trek in general, TNG is my favourite series so far. Voyager wasn't bad but it reminded me of TNG a lot and the same goes for DS9. Didn't follow Enterprise but I did like the uniforms a lot :-)

Maybe this is just me but... I had the feeling that star trek discovery is all about not being "white"... It feels like they go all the way to be so diverse in the cast it just doesn't make any sense anymore. Even the white Klingon was named an accident of nature... I honestly feel like watching American liberal propaganda instead of Star Trek.

I know with all the alternative minority agendas being push into everyone this can be a problem, but I didn't really notice such an issue in Discovery.

If you haven't watched EP3 yet then other than the main actor and some aliens nearly everyone else on the Discovery have been white so far, including the captain.

Remember though that this is Star Trek and the whole point originally was diversity and acceptance. I really haven't felt this is their agenda so far though.

Watched EP3 and indeed it changed my perception a bit. Still not convinced, it doesn't feel like Star Trek (yet).

This makes sense for Star Trek, though. Putting politics aside, having a majority of Caucasians wouldn't make sense because Starfleet would definitely have people from all over the world as it isn't an American or European organization.

I watched them the other day and overall I liked it. It did amuse me that #1 did exactly what she said not to do 5 minutes previously thou :p

I've watched all 3 episodes. I like them overall. I can see a lot of resemblance to the new Battle Star Gallactica and DS9 somewhat. Oh, one more thing, I just love the opening. It's so stylish. It's just like watching a new demo from Revision for me ;)

They should have just launched Axanar instead. IMHO 'Discovery' was such a mess from the beginning with recasts and the stop and start nature of trying to check all the 'PC' boxes makes it an unholy mess that is a political statement and not a well thought out show...

Axanar was done first class, used the original canon (linked strongly to FASA's star trek system). Even used Apollo (RIP) as the Klingon. To my view, Axanar, even with the prequel release was so much stronger and CBS got scared and started regulating fan films because Axanar was better than anything they could release. All the many Star Trek fans I know think Axanar is superior to Discovery, check it out and let me know your thoughts...

Even when JJ Abrams tried to rescue it from the sights of CBS, it wasn't enough. CBS really missed an opportunity and killed the best star trek hope the fans had. Oh well at least star trek continues is still releasing episodes...

I honestly have seen all the series and movies of Star Trek except deep space 9 and after 3 chapters of Discovery I do not understand it.
They look like movies, lots of visual effects .. but the story and the focus did not just like me very much.

Speaking of fan made Star Trek : http://www.startrekcontinues.com

I enjoy them, they are well done for sure. As I mentioned in my original post, surprised CBS hasn't taken that one out also...

You are not alone, all the fans I talk to feel the same way. They checked boxes and didn't think about the show, imho.

Back in the day, I started to really like Babylon 5 because I felt that it was well thought out and fairly well executed. It was LOL funny with some of the anti pc humor. I bet in the next episode of discovery they wear resist shirts...

Totally agree, it has the movie feel more than a series feel. Star Trek (especially TNG) was at its best after characters had developed and their personalities shone through. So, I'm willing to see how things go with Discovery now that the actual plot has (hopefully?) started aboard the USS Discovery.

Being totally honest here, I don't see how the show is trying to be overly PC or anything like that. I sincerely hope the comments in this thread aren't code for "there's too many non-whites" because that's all I can think of.
