Hello Retro Users

Recently I decided to take the plunge and purchased a FZ1 Panasonic 3DO Console (Japanese Version). Sadly this consoles was incredibly expensive back in the day and is probably the reason the PS1 prevailed.

I have a stepdown transformer so getting it up and running was not a problem.

Typically me, I have gone a bit mad and bought myself a load of games and I am not going to lie I am pleasantly surprised on this machines capabilities.

I didn't realise there was a machine with the PS1 capabilities before the PS1.

I have never played "Space Hulk" on the PS1 and it was my first experience of it when I got it for my 3DO and I was like wow I did not expect what the game provides I'm not saying its better than the PS1 version but again I have not experienced this version either.

So I googled 3DO Vs PS1 games, video's and was shock at how some look better and others are disappointing especially Doom. I don't understand why it is not full screen on the 3DO, when other games you expect to be worse are actually better on the 3DO.

When buying the console, I did not do my research on the console and discovered after buying that the ODE that was created sadly did not have the greatest support with money being taken but orders not completed, I myself have gone for an AliExpress version of the ODE which is not great because it does not support the original creator, but from what I have seen on discord the original Creator has lost a lot of respect and trust because of his actions.

I'm hoping I can get this ODE working and hopefully it does not need me to remove the Original drive and keeps this functionality, Still awaiting it as of this post.

Anyway attached is a YouTube Video with comparisons of games for both consoles.

I remember Super Street Fighter 2 being a really decent version on the 3DO.

The Doom port could just be a bad port, for example the 32x port was on a small screen too but it's since had a home brew port that plays fine full screen so the 3DO is probably capable too.

I've been quite lucky on the few games I have bought for the 3DO being of a reasonable price but I'm starting to see that I was lucky on my first attempts.

I'm really hoping this ODE works out of which I will report back here of the progress.

Surprisingly I managed to get "Street Fighter II Turbo" for the price of a repo so well chuffed with that.

its a new chapter in my retro career and I'm really enjoying it.

3DO have some good games and when first came out, it was ahead of time.

Street Fighter Turbo
Road Rash
The Need for Speed
Samurai Showdown (it like neo geo game that is almost good!)
Return Fire
Super Wing Commander
Mad Dog McCree
Alone in the Dark

I had the Panasonic FZ10. They were pretty good. I had The Need For Speed, Road Rash and Street Fighter II Turbo but, sold it to buy a PS1. The 1 thing i disliked was the video output, it was compsite and svideo only, if i remmeber corectly? i'd buy another though, if I could find one in decent shape for the right price. :) (y)

Yes, Svideo and composite video outputs are what my FZ1 has I think it must be a new model through because it doesn't have the 240p/480i switch that I have read about this model having.

The picture quality is pretty good from the composite but I will be using SVideo output when I work out its final resting place in my jam packed man cave
