If you have read my thread about the 6581 2182 sids I purchased from Angrand and haven't been able to get one, I have 2 on offer.

I have taken time to fully test these and all channels and filters sound great.

$10 AUS each + postage.

I might have more coming soon.

A really good aftermarket 6581 SID replacement.

These are the good ones I was talking about and cheaper than swinsid.

I hope they made 1000s of these but 25% are duds, So I have done the sorting and testing for you.

These work !

I have 2 to give away just to prove these work and a good find.

I think "aftermarket" is not exactly the right word.

If the SIDs you offered are what you seem to think they are then the right word would be "clones" or "counterfeits".

In the specific case, I have to admit I can only bow down and raise my hat off to those who achieved manufacturing working unauthorized copies of the SID since making low level replicas of a chip integrating both analog and digital functions is undoubtedly extremely difficult. Especially if 75% of them turn out to work perfectly well which only warrants even more awe and admiration for the exploit.

I really hope they make thousands more!! :thumbsup:

Package arrived and feedback left.

Will test it out soon to hear how a good fake SID sounds. :)

I hope I can test it this weekend and then I will make some recordings so you can hear how it sounds compared with various original SIDs.
 
So I did some tests.. The filters in the 6581 I received are clearly not working. Some tracks are completely silent, for example the Aliens tracks which uses the filters a lot. Some just sound very wrong due to the missing filters. Tracks that do not use the filters sound more or less as they should.

Here are some recordings for you to listen to (I also added recordings from a SwinSIDv2 and the SID emulator in the 1541 Ultimate-II cart, both in 6581 mode):

If all these fakes have bad filters, then they are not worth using at all in my opinion since the filters are such an important aspect of a SID. While the SwinSID sounds different from a real SID, it doesn't do a bad job, and the same goes for the SID emulation in the 1541U-II (which most of serious C64 users should have anyway? :)). They both sound more like 8580s though even in 6581 mode, but the filter distortion in the 6581 is hard to emulate.

But many thanks to bundyboy123 for letting me try one out. You do write that the filters were working for you, so perhaps they died somewhere in transit (they did go halfway around the world)? I figure these fakes are still very sensitive to ESD, and the packaging may not have been sufficient to protect against that.

The fake SID sounds very weird, I'll pass.

Maybe they were frazzled in an x-ray machine somewhere along the way..?

If it's a normal chip (real SID?), I doubt it would be damaged by X-rays on airports.
If it's a clone with memory or something similar inside then anything is possible.

What kind of damage radiation can cause on semiconductors?

• Bulk damage : Occurs when the energy transferred to the silicon
atom is sufficient to remove it from the crystal lattice. This damage
is permanent. The great majority of currently available X-ray
