Turns out I had to pay 120 euros taxes for my PPC turbocard before they would release it from customs.

This is money taken directly out of the budget that was supposed to go towards getting a mediator and stuff, now I will have to come up with extra funds or delay my project. This is super annoying. Note to self: if it is outside European Union, think again before buying it

Yep I've been stung a few times buying from USA & Austrailia, it really sux :(

I got my Warpengine from USA a few years ago but by the looks of it I got away fairly lightly. IIRC it was about £40 including the post office fee.

Was it parcel force by any chance?

I got hit with a £4 customs fee, but £11 - 15 (been awhile!) charge from parcel force.

Since then, I ask for DHL shipping - their admin fee is 1.50 when you have to pay a customs charge

It may have been but I've done a lot of sleeping since then and can't remember for sure

I'm sure the post office fee was about £15

Yeah, parcelforce most likely. Its ridiculous and you cant do anything about it.

UPS is the same, so far only DHL is reasonable. They even deliver the item and invoice you later - rather than waiting 2 days for a letter telling you that you need to pay fees/tax and arrange redelivery :(

@Mendel

Was the value you paid for the card on the customs form? I may pay more for an item I really want even if it really does not have the value I paid. It just makes me wonder how they come up with the crazy high custom charges on old technology.

If the item you purchased originated or resided within the EU (over the last three years) you can claim a full rebate including handling charges.

A lot of the retrolicious gear flows in and out of territories as such its quite possible that the item(s) that you purchased are customs exempt since they may have originated within the EU (in the last three years)

for example

I sold SdG a Masoboshi SCSI card in the US, after a few months its not what she wants so she put's it on sale and a guy in germany buys it...

Normally the guy in germany would be expected to pay import (customs) duty - however as the adapter has only been outside the EU for less than three years - it is exempt from customs duty.

American and Austrailian territories have a very similar exemption but the duration of stay outside their boarders is different.

I humbly urge everyone to check up on their customs and excise laws and regulations -

Anyone sending an item back to place of origin (within the last three years) should label them as product returns and or lable it as Product of the EU or US etc.

I have a card from Germany blocked from 14/03 !!! They wants original documentations from seller !

It doesn't hurt to give them a call

here is their website and a contact number 020 690 600

dont worry about having paid the duty, I am pretty sure you would have to do so to release the package anyway and then claim for a rebate - its pretty much what they do in most european countries.

give'em a call and see if they can help you.

after all thats what they are paid for.

Well that IS an interesting piece of information. I may have to ask if I can get my money back based on the fact that it seems the card was in Poland in 2010...

Sold by stachu to dangermouse:

and then from dangermouse to me:

Too bad I already paid the customs, this may not be easy process to get my money back...

It's also a good thing to look among others at articles 23 and 25 of the COUNCIL REGULATION (EC) No 1186/2009 of 16 November 2009. :)

They just calculated 23% tax for the price of what I paid for the card.

I called them and they would hit me with a ****load of bureaucracy and say I would have to prove that value added tax has previously already been paid for this product if I wanted to get my money back. Sounds like a lot of hassle and I might spend my time better doing something more meaningful, like possibly something like this::deadhorse At least a lesson learned... Basically the customs official I called was very helpful and friendly though and told me I could ask for a refund but it would most probably be a waste of time as the form would come back rejected. It would have been a different story if it was bought from a company to an individual but from individual to individual and then to third individual it is a lot less likely to get customs decisions overruled.

If you trust the seller, make a paypal payment for a 20 year old pcb for practically nought and as the seller has such a worthy cause, donate him some money via paypal gift. ;)

Death to customs!!

I paid $200 CDN on an A4000 in a tower case conversion in customs alone. That was like xx% of it's purchase price.

It was made in the bloody US.
I bought it from the US.
It was shipped to Canada.
It's been out of production for something like twenty years.

There's this "North American Free Trade Agreement" thing.. but apparently it's only for big corporations, not individuals.

I also paid xxx US$ for A4000T from US and it was 25% of its price.
I wonder where instead of US I can take it?
