Whoa everyone! Stop putting prices of items that you paid. That could be construed as price driving, which is not allowed here.

:)

Though I obviously had no intention of price driving amiga hardware prices here, I will edit out the amount I paid taxes as per your request. Sorry!

@Mendel

No! It wasn't you. :) I was referring to Renegrade and Ivan's posts.

Heather

Turns out I had to pay 120 euros taxes for my PPC turbocard before they would release it from customs.
...
Note to self: if it is outside European Union, think again before buying it

120 euro is quite a lot "added". but given the price of PPC cards today, is that just the VAT?

EDIT: Appararently it is.. well, I have to deal with that with everything. so everything under 130 eur I ask to be marked as gift, everything over I ask to be marked as 120-ish eur and as gift ;) (here in norway gifts can have a particular value and non-gifts waaaaay less w/o taxing)

@Mendel

Was the value you paid for the card on the customs form? I may pay more for an item I really want even if it really does not have the value I paid. It just makes me wonder how they come up with the crazy high custom charges on old technology.

Heather

They just calculated 23% tax for the price of what I paid for the card.

I called them and they would hit me with a ****load of bureaucracy and say I would have to prove that value added tax has previously already been paid for this product if I wanted to get my money back. Sounds like a lot of hassle and I might spend my time better doing something more meaningful, like possibly something like this::deadhorse At least a lesson learned... Basically the customs official I called was very helpful and friendly though and told me I could ask for a refund but it would most probably be a waste of time as the form would come back rejected. It would have been a different story if it was bought from a company to an individual but from individual to individual and then to third individual it is a lot less likely to get customs decisions overruled.

This is quite a common tactic, dont be put off and fill in the forms, you will get a rebate.

At the end of the day 120 euros, is better in your pocket than theres.. it only takes a few minutes to fill the forms in and put a covering letter together.

You could ask dangermouse if you can have a copy of his receipt when he bought it from Stan

its worth a couple of PM's buddy =)

In Finland, everything that has a taxable value (including postage) of 45€ and over is subject to customs and VAT. And the VAT is calculated from the sum of taxable value and customs.

Sorry about that, I wasn't intending to put a value on the machine. I figured it was okay to state amount paid and such as the machine has an undisclosed amount of upgrades and extra bits included. (thus I figured it was specific to this one and only machine, and being the sole owner of the machine, I had the right to dictate the price could I sell it at ;) )

I'll refrain from making mention of any prices in the future.

My neighbour told me if it's 2nd hand it shouldn't be under subject of charges if marked as so. I don't know how true that is.

No problem at all! We are very strict about price driving here so it's best not to discuss prices at all unless you are setting a price of something you are selling.

Don't tell me about customs taxes! Those greedy :censored:ed crazy :censored: always put 60% on taxes, and then another tax (yes, TWO TAXES!) of R$68,00 (~USD28 / £23.50) over the imported good, gift or not!

So in final calculation, around 110% over an item of USD50 or less. The higher the initial value, worse is the tax!:****ed:

I must be very lucky. I have had several items sent to me from Netherlands, UK and Germany and never had to pay any taxes.

Last was the PAL Commodore 64C I just bought from the UK. Even said Computer on the little green tax slip but no charges at all

:o

What the..? How did it end up with a flat rate and a percentage all at once?

Mind you I'm supposed to be paying 0% for shipments from the US. Or maybe 13% if they think I should pay HST. I'm paying significantly more than than either of those figures! We do have two separate free-trade agreements with the US (one signed by Mexico too) after all.. I wonder if the Customs guys are running a protection racket? "Youse guys pays us, or your package ahhh.. goes missin', see?"

And the card arrived (according to the tracking) while I was at work and my wife received it. And now I will have to explain to her what a power pc turbo card is and why I spent so much on it  :Doh::Doh:

Quadruple facepalm. When two hands are just not enough. Had no idea they would deliver it all the way to my home. Anyone else have problem with home deliveries where you can´t hide your crazy spendings from family? :D At least I can tell her I only have 2 amigas, not 17... well... they didn´t reproduce yet that is... maybe there will be 15 small amiga 500s in a few years, who knows.

Not at all. Anything sent within EU countries are exempt from customs. Any labels showing contents of the parcel is probably down to the courier.

I've also never had to pay an import duty on anything I've ever purchased from outside the country. That may be because the USA is such a huge market but I'm not sure.

Heather

I've had to pay customs charges on packages from America. One for the uIEC/SD and another for my JiffyDOS from the legitimate eBay source.

Sodding expensive

AHA! So that's how you got so many...

Now I just gotta figure out which ones are boys and which are girls and pair 'em up.. set up a small business on ebay selling the offspring as an Amiga dealer, and quit my day job!

Woohoo!

Always ask if they can check the 'Gift' option. if they send it as 'goods' then theres a big chance you pay customs. A lot of people/shops in usa are afraid to check the 'gift' option because they can be charged for not paying tax on the item. Real Patriots. ohwell just tell them anyway.
