TV Licence?

The amount of money the BBC has wasted in the past is insane. Some time between the 80's and the present day, its spending got completely out of control. At the same time, the quality of the programming it produces has gone off the rails. The BBC could easily have funded new productions out of foreign sales alone, but instead they relentlessly follow a policy of inventing a new massive expense very few years, be it the switch to digital, interactive, HDTV, or the new one, pointlessly relocating your facilities all over the country for some daft idea about equality and opportunity. Yet this was the company that not so long ago shut down the Pebble Mill studios, and was seemingly did everything it could to make everything more London centric.

While every other TV company has had to reign in its productions costs and excessive spending to face the realities of the modern multi-channel market, the license fee has shielded them. They claim to spend a fair percentage of their budget on production, but when you actually look at what they produce, you have to ask where all the money is going, because it certainly is not on the programmes.

And when you look at the amount of money invested into the BBC by license payers, and look at the investment in technology and the development of cutting edge production departments, wardrobe and studios, etc, you have to ask why they keep selling all these departments off! Do license payers get a rebate?

Winter will be over soon... :)

Same as always. They'll glue some scaffolding to the roof of a transit van and write "iPlayer detection unit" on it.

As for the BBC wasting money, look no further than this. They actually designed and built a computer just to generate a single ident. Forgive me for being captain obvious but I recon it would have been cheaper just to ask an effects company to do it, then tape it.

Lmao, so true though i can see why people believed it in the past, people can be so gullible and if you don't know it's easy to believe.

Watch out all those in the UK with no TV license that use iPlayer ... there are plans in the works!

dos`t surprise me, but how will it be policed ??

I suspect the BBC will take note of the IP address and ask the ISP just for the home address, which in turn will be looked up on the TV license list. There will no doubt be some clause in the new law that will give the BBC this power of discovery without resorting to court orders

ISP's wont give that information out, they refused when the recording and movie industry tried to threaten them as well.

In response to the original post, why don't you just set up a Direct Debit? I've never had to do anything to pay my TV license for the last ten years, I just get a letter once a year telling me they've taken the money. Even easier than paying online.

Don't be so sure ... it only needs a small change to the license law (being debated soon) for something like this to come into effect. Knowing the BBC, they'll move heaven and earth to get things to go their way as per usual.

But, we shall see ... it's going to be interesting in how they will enforce things - maybe like Sky, you'll need to type in your license/account number, who knows ...

What bugs me the most is the lack of choice. If I don't want to watch sky or virgin stuff then I can choose not to pay.But if I never watch BBC stuff I still have to pay even if I never watch their channels.I think that if everyone was given the option of cutting out the BBC channels from their TV and not paying a fee the BBC would lose loads of money so they force us instead.

If we had a choice they wouldnt just loose money it would collapse. They'd be forced to scrap the bs niche radio stations (how many do we need?), BBC3 and 4 would get the chop, the bloated website would be knackered, world service would be cut all crap that shouldnt have money wasted on it anyway.

Noone working on the channel should be paid more than 50k a year. If they think they can get more elsewhere let them, it's a publically funded service it doesnt need to get ratings so can and should throw known presenters to the scrapheap if they want more money and keep giving new people a break on tv the line of wannabes is long enough.

Mini rant over.
