Hi all

I have an A3640 in my A4000. Im lookin at a Warp Engine but TBH it just seems the same as an A3640 but with RAM and SCSI.

Can anyone tell me whether its worth buying this?

If its only a small increase in speed, then considering I dont use my A4000 that much Id rather not buy it but if its much faster then I might end up suing it more!

Thanks
Taj

If you can afford it, buy this card. If you can't afford it, sell
your grandmother. You will not regret it.

Thankfully Im the King in my house :D

My partner also allows me to say that as well - as long as nobody else hears me say it :D

I've got a Warp in my 4000D. I got it from the other bay about a year ago. Cost me an arm and a leg. Had no problems with it apart from it needs a new fan when I get round to it.

SCSI is going to be a huge improvement for all I/O (which speeds up the Workbench and application load times), and you'll no longer be limited to 16 MB of RAM, but the increase in processing power is rather modest. If you just want a little more CPU power and can live with the RAM limit I recommend overclocking the A3640 instead.

I have had 2 4040s. They are great accelerators, with a good performance uplift due to local RAM. I approve :)

Just want to say the Warp Engine is the fastest 040 card ever made. There are conditions though. It has t be the 40Mhz version & it has to have 60ns ram fitted to it in order to really fly.

You can not get a faster 040 card anywhere & it's very hard to find good working examples thesedays. An overclocked A3640 comes no where near this card in any instance.

Its really very simple, any cpu card with ram on it will be faster than the a3640

I assume the really big win is having fast, local 32-bit FastRAM on the card, which would allow the CPU to absolutely fly and give very nice DMA transfers to the on-board SCSI controller.

Thanks for all the info dudes :) Unfortunately I missed out! At least I know its a good card though, Ill keep an eye out for one.

FYI, my A3640 card is a rev 3.1 with socketed 040. Does that mean its upgradable? I understand that not having memory on board stuffs it over :)

Confession time: I'm using my warpengine with the IDE interface with a CF card on it... Mea culpa :D

Actually not - an A3640 overclocked to 33 MHz beats a 28 MHz WarpEngine in CPU bound tasks, such as AIBB's Dhrystone, Sort, and IMath. Everything is faster than the stock A3640 though, but overclocking gives amazing bang per buck :)

I trade my Warp full 040/40 with 128Mb for a Blizzard 1260 & a 3.1 A3640 (EC040/25MHz) an year ago.

No regrets for the A1200.

On the 4000 side...:banghead:

I'd settle for any 040 card that accommodates fast ram. :)

Be happy with your 3640 ;) :D

No complains about that, mate. :D It's just that some more fast RAM wouldn't hurt and a new CPU card is probably the most cost effective solution, since a DKB3128s or X-caliburs do not exactly grow on trees. :(
