I have been playing a game on the C64 hooked up to a CRT TV - this game has a big white area on the bottom of the screen with highscores, etc. - I have noticed that this area after a few seconds starts turning reddish/purple. I then switched off the game - it took around half a minute for the redness to go away.

:o

What's going on, and... er, can it be fixed?

is it only with this game or any time with normal tv use

as it looks like magnetic interference. like a magnet is pulling the colours

It happens whenever there is a big white area. At least with the C64 (via S-Video cable).

It's a normal phenomenon called blooming when the shadow mask heats up casusing purity errors....
Turn your contrast down to reduce the beam energy hitting the shadow mask, white is obviously max beam current.

TC :)

Thanks for the replies!

I have decreased contrast and the problem, although still there, is not that bad. Good to know that my TV isn't 'broken' though.

Update:

Not sure if this is related... all of a sudden while it was on, the TV made a brief 'hssss' noise and the colours went weird (like blue or something was missing). I switched it completely off, and on again, and it is working fine again.

What's going on now? :o:o:o:blink::picard

probably you need to service the set... I have seen it before, first you "lose" one color and it fixes it self, then it happens more often and lastly it stays with missing color...

Tomorrow I'm phoning a technician!

Oh and thanks for your reply

That hiss sound is caused by the triplicator or the HOT transformer (aka flyback), pending the TV model.

Can also be caused by another place with current leak caused by failing insulation on very high voltage devices, typically the flyback, the high voltage cable that goes to the tube or the high voltage cable that goes to the tube's neck where the colour cannons are.

Thanks! Any idea why switching the TV off and back on after a few minutes 'fixed' the problem? This didn't happen again.

Very similar thing has happened to me last week. CRT working fine then that discolouration. Turn off and then it would be OK. It then got even worse (the whole screen discoloured) Turn off for a while then it would be OK. Now it seems to be permanently like it (for the last 5 days) .... 3rd CRT in 2 months, they were all old and well used 'freebies' that I had acquired. Now, reluctantly need a modern TV solution that I am currently researching etc.

Hope it works out mate, if I could afford it (do techs still repair CRT's?) I would get all 3 x fixed ...

Well over here you can find technician's that still fix CRTs but the general consensus (even from them) is that you upgrade to a modern solution. This is also aided by the fact that parts are getting harder and harder to find. I will try and hang on to my CRT for as long as possible, and after that I'll get a Framemeister (I know I could get an Indivision for Amiga but I have other consoles).
