It seems that we have a few members that assume we sit on AmiBay 24/7 checking that all posts and threads adhere to the rules.

So what else do we do when time allows us too.

We manage all reported posts, update thread prefixes, thread titles, close and archive threads.

Deal with some obnoxious members that aren't prepared to follow the rules even when explained to them politely.

Dealing with numerous PMs on various subjects.

Closing members accounts when requested.

Cleaning up threads when spotted.

Listening to requests for improvements to the Forum and action them when possible.

Here's a few facts and figures taken just now.

We all have real lifes and other things that get in the way.

i.e. I'm the Admin that recently lost his mother whose funeral was on the anniversary of my father passing.
The above is not looking for sympathy but just stating a fact.

Today is my partners birthday and so far today we've spent 2 hours together because I've been working at Skegness most of the day.
So I may have looked at AmiBay while working but I wasn't able to post due to the nature of the work.

So rather than griping because sometimes we may slip up and miss some things - why not join us in helping to keep AmiBay the friendly Forum it is and should be.

So if you think you can do a better job let us know and we'll consider you to join the band of bad guys ;)

Does that really include reading peoples private messages as some have claimed?

Just to be clear - we only read PMs when a dispute has been raised and only then with the permission of the relevant member.

Also all of the other Mods/Admins have busy lifes and like me they do what they can when they can.

It's possible for Admins to see conversations, that would almost certainly require database access although there are probably forum addons to that can be installed.

Attached what I found on xenForo. (Note how they're called conversations and not private messages.)

I can't imagine any of the mods here would have a need (or want to) access them unless it was a case of fraud or some other critical matter like harassment though.

They're busy enough with forum posts without reading your DMs too!

Perhaps the individual who does the scheduling could allow a leave of absence to those who experience home and work-related issues; most companies do this, and if necessary bring in temporary “moderators” to cover those times when individuals are distracted by other tasks and problems. I assume that this position is unpaid, and there is a large British pool of Amiga enthusiasts who are left with free time, such as the ones who have retired, but remain active on Amibay.

@bdb

There is no scheduling per se. Admin and mods turn up here in their free time.

Retired and still active in the scene you say?

AmiBay is NOT a company. It's a group of volunteers that manage AmiBay for our members.

You could always volunteer to help

I never said it was a company, but schedules don't require a corporate setting to help fill in the need for someone to oversee a set of forum rules within posts and discussions.

As I noted in my private message, I offered or volunteered a few years back, and never received a reply, much less a no. Since my retirement 4-years ago, I certainly have the time, but I don't post much using capital letters, so somewhat courteous (American punctuated) text is about it.

I've been replying to your latest PM

I think everyone can volunteer to help. You know how.
You don't need the sherif badge or the permission of moderators to do it.
This one goes to everyone and not to @bdb

Man, hang in there @davideo. Honestly, we all need to cut the time in front of a screen by half, and then once again. The whole point of all these tools seems to be increased entanglement and engagement to drive us to spend more time on them. amibay(amiably? autocorrect) is not like that, but most of the internet out there is all about that strategy. Even search results suck to keep us searing again and again.

Think of it this way...remember when you were on a BBS and your mom or sister would pick up the phone and disconnect you, and then they were like..."I'm on the phone now!" and we had to go and live in the real world for a while? Somehow, I don't recall any of that time as lost. These silicone valley creeps have their claws too damn deep into us. A friend told me that the criminally convicted organization know as "eBay" demands social security number and a copy of the photo ID and banking info to list items for sale. The balls on these guys gathering our private information, which they are certain to lose and be breached on. How did this happen?

Let's start with off-line Sundays and take it from there, with next step being 2-no-phone days a week, where we just don't even touch the phones. Tall order, I know.

How it happened is simple ... you gave the information to them yourself.

Can we get back on topic now? This is not the right thread to go ebay bashing again.

@miggymad, Forgive the shoehorning of eBay bash, such an easy target. And I would never give these creeps such information. But to your point, many indeed have and do. They question was, how did it come to the point where these tech creeps allowed to keep such sensitive private government issued id information on their servers without any meaningful data breach consequences, ever? Anyhow, I'll leave now before I derail further.

A few members have offered to assist with managing AmiBay and will be active shortly.

This should help to spread the workload but as before if you see a problem that needs sorting use the Report link.
