Just curious, I was going to get one of these but after the long wait, I can't even recall if I got offered one... I completely went off the boil, mainly I think because when it came down to it I just couldn't see myself using it.

So, people with raspberry pi's: what are you using them for, and why?

Believe it or not, I have actually learnt a lot and got to grips with Linux finally after all these years.
Always had distros laying about but couldnt be really motivated enough.

The Pi finally forced me as there was no other option

But RISC OS is really coming along well and thats where I think I will be settling eventually.

TC ;)

I'm using one of them for RISC OS, because I never really used it before... The other is currently sealed in the box and propping up another box :p

Could there perhaps be rumblings of somebody porting an Amiga-oid OS to the Pi?

What is the best OS for Raspberry PI?

I think running window 7 would be too slow on it thought

Windows 7 can ONLY run using a compiled version for ARM of VMware client and it's not so much fun...
Only linux is supposed to run fine on the Pi and distros that atm are working flawlesly are:
- Raspbian (special version of Debian Wheezy compiled and configured for Pi)
- Arch
- Fedora
- Gentoo

Also RiscOS can be used afai saw, but needs more work as well.

Raspbian which was released as stable some days ago REALLY rox and it's almost 40% faster than the previous Debian Squezy distro.
I have messed a lot with this version and I'm very pleased with it. WiFi also works as intended and atm my Pi is running headless as a mini server.
Working with Apache/PHP/MySQL/phpMyAdmin/Webmin for the moment which are really enjoyable :)

As TC said, the best thing about the Pi (at least in my case) is that it made me mess up with Linux again but in a more effective way as I numerous times messed with many distros but never actually kept one as a primary system.
At least now with the Pi you OUGHT to live with Linux which made me remember and learned A LOT more stuff about it.
It's definitely a keeper :)

I think its only a matter of time when you get linux distros like ubuntu and linux mint and other big names come on to the Pi which can only be a good thing.

Yay it's here!

Yay it's here!

My Pi is finally in my grasp. I intend to use it as a multipurpose computer, because of its portability. I'm gonna shoehorn it into a box (too big for altoids tin, but maybe a tobacco tin!) and then see what can be done with several SD cards, containing different builds.

It's currently hanging out of our telly in the living room, allowing me to type this!

PS: Farnell came through much quicker than RS Components for me.

Raspbian linux is the only Pi linux build worth having right now as it is the only one with hardware floating point enabled.

Erm the Pi's CPU is an ARM 11 and so won't run Windows 7 natively (Intel x86!)

I'm using my Pi as a direct replacement for my XBOX-1 running XBMC. With RaspBMC RC4 it feels almost the same albeit capable of much higher resolutions than the xbox. Unfortunately there is no hardware accelerated MPEG2 and so DVD ISO's don't play :(
