Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

Oh, I know HDs cost a lot more prior to that, but it is still quite a shock to see how much we paid for such small HDs (by today's standards).

I remember when the first 10MB HD came out for the ST and it cost £999.99. Now that was quite mad when you think it could only hold about 12 floppy disks worth of data. About the only usefulness was to boot the OS quickly, although with that already completely in ROM on an ST it wasn't even used for that. Held a few images for DTP work I suppose.

I wonder if we will think the same in another 20 years looking back on current prices? I expect so. A 1TB drive for £69 sounds like a bargain now, but we might be using a completely different storage medium in the future. SSD's are already gaining momentum as the technology is developed, with 500GB units now available at a price. But I can't see even that lasting for ever as out data storage requirements continue to grow faster all the time.

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

After being a bit of a wiz on some old systems at school between 1978 and 1982 I could never afford my own and gave computers a break for a few years.

I remeber my first program was in basic to simulate the throwing of a dice, it was on a terminal at school then sent by modem to county hall (I saved a copy on tickertape). a week later when we had our alloted time slot on the county hall server they sent back the output to the terminal which it printed on green lined paper with a golf ball printer :)

After getting married in 1987 and starting to get a few quid to my name (only a few I might add) I got hold of a Amstrad cpc464 sooon to be followed by a BBC B which kept me occupied for a few years. So it wasn't untill about 1992/93 that I had my first encounter with an Amiga playing Road Rash at a friend of a friends house on a spanking new A600. Unfortunately for him he fell on bad times and offered it me for a silly price which I couldn't refuse.
I remember setting it up at home having only ever had a few games on it thinking how the hell does this mouse idea work then? I had only ever used a keyboard on any machine I had used in the past :mrgreen:

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

i dont really remember but it hat to be around 1993 when my dad bought an A500 just to play around with it, it started. about a year later i had my first own amiga, an A500+ in a micronik big tower with scsi,4 drives,HD,CD and so on.. awesome machine that days! some amigas followed. 1200D, 2x A1200T.. all ended about 8 years ago... and started again a weeks ago :) heard about os 3.5 and 3.9, pci bus boards an other cool stuff.. amiga i´m coming back :D

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

I was a late-comer to the Amiga, getting my first one in late 1991. I had seen and known about the Amiga for years before that but neither I nor my family had money to buy one; not that anyone in my family was even interested in computers. I graduated High School in 1991 and started working at my first full-time job and soon had an Amiga 500 with an external floppy drive. It was almost a year later that I got my first HD, a GVP HD8+.

I was always a Commodore junkie, cutting my teeth on the C64, moving on to a C128 until I got my Amiga. Unfortunately, I sold all my Amiga stuff when I went to the PC world, just as I sold all my C64/C128 stuff when I went to the Amiga. I'd love to go back in time and slap myself silly for doing so!

Amiga Forever, :wink:

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

Amiga Forever!

In 24 years of computer experience, that one statement above kinda says it all for me.

Most folk don't even realise they had a tamed UNIX computer in their hands. :wink:

Now taking Bill......

We've seen Wind0ze CE, Wind0ze ME & Wind0ze NT. .......Funny how it spelt "Cement" & then they release "Vista" ....
PMSL :arrow: ..... bloat-ware ......sooo funny! :lol:

So yeah, a copy of OS3.9 & fast A1200/A4000 with 24Bit Graphics & PCI will do for me! - I can Surf; Word Process in Final Writer & play some fun games when ever I want. I can Emulate a Mac, a Pee Cee & even an Atari amongst others, whilst still maintaining Pre Emptive Multi Tasking.......
Even an A600 with HDLoader is a real fun box with hours of entertainment considering todays extravagant graphical pinnacles.......

So yeah.....

Amiga Forever! :wink:

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

@Skydiving Girl
Believe me, i know the feeling :)

Speaking of stupidity, i gave all my Amiga stuff away for free! A500, A500+, hard drives, memory expansions, A1200 with Blizzard IV 030/50 and self hackered CD-rom at early 1999. :roll: Just because i spent so much time with playing online games like Quake and Sin with my pc :) so i had no time to use Amigas. Always wanted to have a one Bigbox Amiga, so, now i have 3 :D

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

Talking of boatware. My new PC system has a 120GB boot HDD and Vista 64bit with just Office 2007 and Adobe CS4 master collection installed, and the HDD only has 62GB free!!! :o Now that is bloatware!

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

Holy Cr@p! Are you sure you haven't got a Trojan on there squirrelling away someone elses porn? :wink:

That is totally excessive.

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

i had a c64 (which i was very happy with) then my friend Karl turned up with his new A500, which had a disk drive and extra ram, he put in a disk and a game appeared in what seems like an instant, 2 days later i had an A500 and i was hooked, went right up to an A1200 then went to PC's for years, got back into the miggy in 2004 and been here since! :D

cheers, JuvUK

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

Like a lot of other UK members I started with the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC during my teenage years.

I was serving with HM Forces in Germany 1988 and a couple of us went to the NAAFI shop looking to see about this super new 16bit Atari ST computer we'd been reading about. Strangely they didn't have any but rather something in a similar vein called the Amiga A500. I came back with one plus an additional external floppy. The rest as they say is history.

After coming back to the UK as a civilian in 1990 once I'd settled into a job I took a bank loan and bought an A1500 with 1084S Monitor and 60Mb hard disc that set me back a cool £999 + VAT. It was a great machine and I spent lots of time with it, sadly the PC soon started it's inevitable domination and I sold my A1500 to join the herd, as I needed to get upto speed with this beige monster so I could further my career within IT.

Of course I did buy an A1200 as well to keep playing great games :D

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

I first got a atari 2600 from my parents.

It was then already completely obsolete. But they had little money, knew I loved videogames and computers, and did the best they could.

Then somehow I got some money of my own, and bought an Atari XE65 or whatever it was called from a mailorder company.

I soon realised that I had been had, that it was hardly a computer. They kept sending me ads and flyers. One was for an Amiga500

Many babysitting hours later.... And I bought my self an A500. Never regretted it either!

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

@Arnljot

All those hours spent with the Babysitter & getting a miggy out of it too. :lol:

Nice :D

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

@TC

My first device with a CPU, as far as I know:

Then I got (mine came with joysticks, light gun and keyboard):

So I had a desert walk before I joined the fold

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

@ Arnljot

Those Joysticks were brilliant on an Amiga. you could Sooooooo bend the ball in Kick-Off with em. :mrgreen:

Bummer was, they didn't last long doing Banana shots all the time! :|

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

@Kin hell
Yes, I broke my fair share of those :) :lol:

Both on my atari, and on my amigas. I soon developed love for what we called the "Zip stick"

@TC
OMg, now that's 1337 skillz :)

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

@Kin / Arnljot

I still have my original Zip Stick too with the yellow buttons, my default choice for Kick Off2 :wink:

Ah cmon with the respect guys :oops:
In retrospect most 13 yr olds were trading Porn mags & I was searching for 2114 RAM chips & 6522 VIA IC's.
Looking back I think I was mis-guided :lol:

TC :mrgreen:

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

The only design flaw the ZipStick had was that on most of them, the "Autofire on/off" switch broke easily.

I have my fair share of these, and I have to one day get around to fix most of them...

Re: What made you buy your first Amiga?

@ TC

& obviously had the early beginnings of a Lump on the side of your head! :lol:

/....Kin switches to "puppy mode" & legs it again.... :mrgreen:
