Do you know what the actual media dye make is for those Tesco discs? If you have Nero installed it is easy to locate by loading the Nero Info Tool, popping a blank disc in the drive and going to the Disc info tab. Will tell you the disc's dye ID.

As you may or may not know, the labelled disc brand often tells very little about the actual quality of blank media you are buying. It is more important to know what the actual make of disc dye is, as this will tell you where the company purchased their stock of blank discs from before printing their own labels onto them.

The best to find is still Taiyo Yuden which has a TYG02 and TYG03 ID codes on the most recent dyes. Next best is Mitsubishi/Verbatim dyes, which have a MCC03, MCC04, MCC3RG20 or MKM dye code.

If your CD/DVD writing is sufficiently critical that this sort of stuff matters to you, I recommend looking at http://www.svp.co.uk -- These guys sell all manner of recordable media at good prices, and are pretty good at telling you the ATIP info for the discs they sell. I've bought a great deal of 'unbranded' cheap discs from these guys, because I've known the disc substrate is good.

Re: What make(s) of DVD-RW do you use? And what do you think?

UME02 is quite a good dye type as it uses a version of the Mitsubishi AZO metal dye (which is the best you can buy). However UMEdisc dye IDs are not that well supported by quite a few drive firmwares. Drives with a dye learning mode have better luck with them though, and as they are AZO dye based they are good if your drive works with them.

I always only buy AZO Metal based dye based discs. Never touch organic dye based discs such as Prodisc. I'm sure i posted quite a lot about Disc dye types a while back somewhere on here.

@AndyLandy. Yes, SVP have been a great place to buy good quality blank media for some time now. They test and list the actual dye types being used in all batches of the discs they sell, which is a great way to know exactly what you are buying.

However recently they haven't has such good stock of different makes. Bigpockets is another good one to buy from.

Recently there has been some issues with random quality within certain previously good dye types though, because, due to demand, disc fabrication has been expanded outside of the dye makers original locations. TYG03 dye for example originated from Japan, but recent batches can also be made in Malaysia, Singapore and India. The batches coming from India have been really bad and on par with some of the cheap worst dye types on the market.

So now you also have to check the "Made In" country ID on the packaging, as well as the physical dye ID to make sure you are getting the best disks. Japan or Singapore made discs are the best.

Personally I would always pay slightly more to buy better quality dye based discs, because all of the cheaper ones have such a high risk of failure, or degradation of the dye layer within a couple of years. Especially the organic dye based discs.

My bad!
I can get quite annoyed with stuff that's "not fit for purpose" ..... like most CD rewriteds, DVD rewriters, recordable CD and DVD media

I doubt recordable BluRay will be any better tbh.

Re: What make(s) of DVD-RW do you use? And what do you think?

@ Woody

I spect Blu-Ray burning will be as bad as DVD was in it's infancy. The cost per disk now is worse than DVD was in the beginning.
I had a real bad time with some nipon branded Ritek Dye DVD's. Supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread for Movie Material they said. Couple of years down the road, no longer readable?? @%^$~# :pissed:
Really BIG Grrr @ that one, especially when Amiga Floppys still work after 12 years.
