I have regular meet ups with 4 or 5 friends where we play xbox games and drink beer. It's like being 16 again!
I recently suggested a bit of retro action and it seemed my friends thought it was a good idea. The question is this: Which one should I go for? I'd prefer to keep to real hardware but if I were to go down the emulation route would a modded original xbox be the best option? As for real hardware - what should I get? 4 Players would be great though not absolutely required. I'm thinking snes or megadrive, maybe N64. I have a feeling anything 8 bit will be too retro, and Dreamcast onwards too modern.
Give me your opinion!

I'd say mod the xbox and put some emulators on so you can try before buying. At least then you'll get to see which games you and your friends enjoy and you can pick up the real stuff later when you've made your choice

8-bit might be just a bit too 'old' for the average gamer....

but my top 3 would still be...

ColecoVision
Atari 7800 (for both 7800 and 2600)
TurboGrafx16
(probably an honorable mention to NES as well)

of course its all personal preference.

not very useful for '4-player' i realize. (the TG16 has a 4 controller 'tap' (that you can get...) but i dont think very many 4 player games)

(also..TG16/PCE + TurboEverdrive = awesomeness)

:D

I think a great starting point is Mega Drive or SNES though each are more natural 2 player orientated. N64 is my fav and good for 4 players though the pads are tender with the analogue stick being a real issue and this can ruin a good 4 player mash up big time.
PS1 isn't a bad shout as if nothing else it is cheap, there are a mountain of games to choose from and controllers are easy to come by. Reckon I'd probs start here to see if it'd be a success before investing in a load of machines.
I personally would not be swayed towards emulators either - like it or not they're just not the same imho

Big up the suggestions here but if unsure of others commitment some of these could be pricey until you know it'll take off

Dreamcast as well...

Think the poster already mentioned DC but suggested maybe a bit to modern. Also the decent games seem to command a decent price to boot, but I will agree a great 4 player machine with plenty of classic Sega titles available

Put SNES (and Mega Drive maybe) emulator on your xbox (if it's modded) and get a modded PSX.

That'll teach me for not reading the post properly
Shame as the DC comes with the 4 controller ports. I was thinking of Powerstone 1 and ChuChu Rocket that doesn't seem to cost too much.

Sega Saturn with Bomber as it had 10 players on that one! HELL OF FUN!

OR

PS 2 with Timesplitter 2 4 players good Laugh :)

or

N64 with Mario Kart 4 players I think

Mario kart N64 is a must but I'm absolutely amazed no one has mentioned Goldeneye which was iconic for the N64 and had a brilliant 4 player battle mode

I'm also a massive fan of the Saturn but would recommend it as a first system for testing the water with

Game Cube is also an option, with a tasty 4 player mario-kart and a very good rendition of Bomberman. It also has a fair few "fun" titles to play when drinking challenges ;)

The XBox is a stable beast here for Curry Nights on Friday get the guys over and we thrash Mashed - Unleashed - a truly top title that sorely underrated! There is also Gauntlet Legends (you get to find out which one of your friends are loot wh0r3s) as well as Dungeon's and dragons / doom and a fair few other tasty titles to mash out on.

I would also suggest getting the NeoGeo emulator for the XBox, there some amazing multiplayer games to geek out on when the homies are over - Gurok mark of the wolves is one of my favs alongside any and all metal-slug!

I should have made it clear that we play xbox 360 games not xbox. My brother has a chipped xbox with 160gb hard drive tucked away in his loft so I've given him a ring and he's going in the loft tomorrow to get the christmas decorations down! Woohoo! He says it's got a load of emulators on there already so we should be good to go.
Now - fun multiplayer game recommendations. Mashed looks great! Any thing else good on xbox or systems that can be emulated on xbox.

A Vectrex! All other consoles bow and weep before its majesty! (well, that if you can afford one!)

And here's me tryin to be kind on this guy's pocket:lol:.

Can't support the Gamecube view I'm afraid, that system spoilt many a good game. N64 was majestic, snes and mega drive are really the core of old skool console gaming but I reckon the PS1 although it isn't the best offers the most solid "starting point" to engage a group scenario

i have a Vectrex, and love it..and would have suggested it...but it isn't very multi-player friendly... especially as i can't afford a second controller... which seem to be about as much as the Vectrex cost me in the first place :/

The ps1 (its friggin 15 years old already ) is just perfect for drunk&games for the whole night... it got everything... its cheap ... and it got a massive libary of good games (and bad ones that are just fun)
