Which retro console should I buy?

Well, a Sega Dreamcast or a Sony PS2 would be much like the original XBOX you own (I understand that you own the original, not the 360, right?).

I also understand that emulation (via xbox etc) is not what you're looking for, rather than the real old-school hardware.

What I suggest?
Go straight for a Nintendo SNES (ok, or maybe a Sega Megadrive, why not). Awesome 2D beat-em-ups, platforms, shooters and most of the titles are ported from the ones (we) found in the arcades (coin-ops) back to the days. Consoles like N64 etc have rather own versions (mainly in ... 3D) than the old pure 2D arcade styling.

But consider SERIOUSLY on buying one of those flash carts (i.e. Everdrive/Super Everdrive etc), because it would be quite difficult to find cartridge titles of your taste. Also with the expense of 4-5 (good) titles for the SNES or MD, you can buy the SD flash cartridge. And your're done!

I knows this takes the expense a bit high, but it's worth every penny!

Lastly, note that video-game consoles of that era (early '90s etc) support two player modes (2x pad connection) so it wont be a four-player fun.

:)

First thing I would do is ask your mates what they remember and liked playing the most, then select the approriate console(s)

I got my brothers modded original xbox from him last week. I've only got one 3rd party controller. It has only got a megadrive emulator on it and a load of fairly poor xbox games.
First thing to do will be get 4 good controllers, then remove all the xbox games or possibly put in a larger hd. Then I'm going to fill it with emulators, roms and maybe a few good multiplayer xbox games.
I'm pretty busy (and skint!) from now until the new year so I'll probably be posting some wanted ads then.

Got to be a Dreamcast, you can still get them and most games at a decent rate. Check out Ooga Booga for multi player antics, the missions on Vanishing Point that will make you feel like throwing the controller at the screen and Looney Tunes Space Race for some Mario Kart style fun.

Also, its got Shenmue I & II, Grandia II, Skies Of Arcadia and a bazillion other great games.

this is the reason why I have more consoles than one . . .
the hardest question for me is what I play today??
