I'm not trying to start a flamewar here, I'm genuinely curious about what every thinks about this.

For me it's a no-brainer. The hardware for running Morphos is cheap and easy to come by, and there's even a laptop supported now. I think the OS is mature and works well, and there's quite a lot of applications and a nice scene around it. It performs well too and is being actively developed, and a license isn't that steep (although it's not cheap either). It does suck that the license is tied to the machine, though.

Amiga OS 4.x runs on classic Amiga PPC hardware, and if you've already got that then it's obviously a good choice. But that hardware is expensive, and it seems like all the alternatives are too. Or am I wrong there?

Would love to have some thoughts from everyone, no matter which newschool Amiga-like OS you prefer!

I prefer the AROS idea, even cheaper for hardware.

MorphOS is nice when I've used the demo, but I begrudge paying M$ for a licence of their latest and greatest, let alone trying to find the spare cash for optional hobby OS's. Kills it for me straight away.

I use AmigaOS 4.1 but not on Classic Amigas because his compatibility and speed issues.

Now I have 4.1 Update 4 & Debian on my Sam440ep-Flex and very happy with this setup :)

I am a MorphOS guy, all the way. The new prices have made it even more affordable. In my opinion they are 100% i the correct way, except the fact that they should support classic Amiga again.

AOS4.x is good, it gets even better and 4.1 runs really fast on my classic 1200PPC system, BUT they are doing the GREAT mistake to make it available only in very expensive hardware. I mean REALLY EXPENSIVE.

I would love to buy an X1000 but I simply can not afford it.

Even if I could, it is not reasonable to me to spend almost 2000 euros for such a machine... with the same money I could buy a super duper Mac dream machine or a very good PC.

1000 euro in total is the maximum cash that I have spent for Amiga stuff / hobby hardware. Now I can not spend such an amount of money anyway and I do not think it is worth anyway.

If they want OS4 to have more success they should make it available in cheaper hardware or make the existing hardware cheaper.

OS4 is basically the ferrari of OSes.

That's not a compliment. Nissan build cheaper, more reliable cars that go as fast.

I like them all
and think its cool we
have clone's of amiga os

got a nice aros box here
and a laptop with winuae
to go along with my classic's

I can only get new computers for a1200 money
£299 price 's its a habit for the 90's ;) so power mac not
new i know but will recon it and make a cool case for it
as c.b.m cant!
or os4 netbook whatever i can get 1st when i have the
money seved up .that another habit from the 90's
or you will be waiting to more weeks for ten years LOL

I use AmigaOS 4.1 Update 4 daily on my Peg2 G4 system. I've tried MorphOS three times, but no... it reminds me of another Linux-distro than AmigaOS; it has a different feeling.

Now, I'm concetrating in AROS, it deserves a second chance.

i went the morphos route on minimac mainly because of the hardware cost.
as my mini mac is a bit of a project machine im still testing it, if it doesnt burst in to flames or melt i will be purchasing a morphos license it was a bonus when they reduced the price of the license with the release of 3.0.

one mistake they have made is releasing morphos 3.0 with power book support without wireless.

I don't see it as a big problem. You can use a computer without wireless.

Now if they'd done something like release it without working usb, that would be a problem.

Just got back in Amiga scene and have used os4,1 and not that impressed but may give it another go or try aros been spoilt by my iPad just works best machine I have ever owned

Think things morph is good used it only mates machine mad professor nick123 good bloke but took at perfect mac put it In miggy case good but hmmm too Steve jobs years to design that case then he goes take it out but Amiga mad like but do accept machine is lacking basic stuff like same spend 400 them have spend more for wireless adapter ranting over still like miggy

My take on it is that MorphOS looks nice of a hobby OS but just seems pointless to me, OS4 also seems pretty pointless.

If I really wanted to run AmigaOS I'd buy a 1200 and run 3.9.
If I wanted the AmigaOS 'feel' on newer HW I'd go for Aros instead.

And if I was just after a decent hobby OS I'd go for Ubuntu
