Why do people list the hardware they own?

Not all coffee brands are pretentious! I use a brand called, "8 O'Clock" that I get it the local Wal-Mart. I find it very near some of the rare, expensive brands from Africa and Hawaii.

I tend to go for the middling brands of coffee. The supermarket cheap coffee tastes cheap, but I'm not interested in the "gourmet" coffee ranges. By and large, it's mostly just so I don't have to drink instant!

As for the original topic, yeah, it's basically showing off. But is that always necessarily a bad thing? I quite like seeing what things others have got.

Well, my standard coffee is not a "Store Brand," but a regional brand with Dark Italian Roast, Columbia, French Roast, plus others. I like it because of the general flavor and it comes in Whole Bean for fresh grinding. The 3 pound bags costs a bit less than a 16" pizza with 1 topping. However, the "Starbucks-like" brands run 2 to 5 times as much; I go through a 3 pound (1.36 Kg) bag a week.

I mainly use a brand of instant coffee called 'Rocket Fuel'... It's cheap and tastes like ass, but it certainly gets me ready for those nasty 5am shifts at work :).

Not sure how we drifted on to coffee, but I happen to like coffee, so let's stick with it.

I usually buy "Taylor's of Harrogate" coffee, they do some nice flavours, including one called "Lazy Sunday" for a nice relaxing brew, and another called "Hot Lava Java" for those days. They're available as ground coffee or as beans (I tend to buy ground coffee. One day I might invest in a bean grinder)

But wow, 1.36kg of coffee a week? That's a lot of coffee! I get through something in the region of 300g a week, and I get told I drink too much of the stuff!

1) Well we were talking about listing stuff; someone wanted to list his mom's can opener, another his 600W blender, I would list (if I thought it appropriate) my Krup's Burr Grinder and B&D Coffee maker

2) If people tell you drink too much coffee, a) Don't listen, b) Tell them they don't drink enough or they wouldn't be in your face, c) List the side effects (that you don't have) and tell them to, "Eat it Raw Fuzznuts!" :picard

 Those are the best answers ever! I am so going to use those! (Actually laughing so hard it hurts right now)

Actually, signatures are handy to use as a shopping list incase you need reminding of something :)

@ Buzzfuzz

where did you get that X1000 poster ?

It's not mine, I can ask the one who owns it.

On the note of coffee, fine by me if you like it, I like Monster, I don't like coffee, there is no right and wrong, just taste.

On the note of listing hardware again, I think there is nothing to be ashamed of, at least we are keeping the feeling alive.
Modern schools these days who teach IT, most of them don't even know about floppies or the term SCSI or whatever you throw at them which predates the smartphone and the pad.

People are proud of their collections and want to show off what they have. It's why I list mine. It's also useful if you want to find someone else with a system or you want to ask someone about one.

I might be proud of my phallus, but I keep it in my pants ;)

I didn't know Honda had made a new car!!!

To be fair.... I would be in two minds if I was proud of it or not, going by Honda's latest vehicular offerings ;) =)

Anyway, the only reason I dont list my collection is

1) character count....
There is a signiture limit, and it doesn't cover a 3rd of my collection

2) If the wife found out...
If my beloved wifie found out half of what I have - that would be the end of the collection

3) Where does one stop?
Do I list internal hardware, systems, upgrades, consoles, games?

So.... for me ... its quite clear that its because I am lazy I don't include a small part of my collection in my signature...

I could of course make one, I've been buying Commodore stuff since 1983 and Amiga stuff since 1986, but it would be larger than any message. Might be a good list for the insurance company if I'm ever robbed by a retro enthusiast.

But really, buying stuff is hardly a claim to fame.

To be fair, the bragging angle is why I changed my signature. Rather than list what I currently have, I've turned mine into a list of links to the Hardware Pr0n projects I've done whilst here on AmiBay. It makes for more interesting reading and merely shows what Amigas I've played with. Most have been sold on to make room for others.

I decided that my collection changed too quickly for it to be a useful thing to list in my sig, so instead I changed it to links to the projects I've done photo booth threads about, whether I still have the machine or not.

I hear an echo

The Prius is made by Toyota; the phallus is made by a complex interaction of testosterone. A priapism is just man-made and painful.

Oh, I said that already? I'm clearly going senile.
