Why do so many people call it "Evilbay"?

It's not inherently evil, nor are the sellers, they're just people trying to make money!
Well, people trying to make money is an universal rule, here we can see people doing that also, but thats the old problem, if the price is too high, it wont sell, at least, in a easy way...

Yeah we rip on eBay a lot but it's still a fantastic place to buy small low value items., remember the days when you had to pay £15 for a cable in Dixons or Maplin you can get for 99p on ebay :)

I have also picked up a lot of local bargains.
So much this.
I use eBay for all sorts of things, primarily low value BIN.
It has it's uses, although I haven't sold any retro on there for years. I've always found a buyer on here.

People got own view on what they think :)

Ebay used be very good as I remember back year 2000 or somethings like that and bought bargain price whatever retro computer it was :)

Now it is so different as it was then:(

Do you remember Yahoo's online auction site? It was awesome, until evilbay bought them out :(

I've bought quite a few things via Egay, but I contacted the sellers directly in a few cases.:p
But putting up an item is a horrible PITA, you have to jump through a few loops to get your ad up, and if you haven't sold an X amount, you can't list it WW.

Last but not least, it's a rort, especially the rule that novice sellers only can get paid via Gaypal.

Oh, and it's not by definition that you always have to wait 23 days for payment, if the punter is happy, he can have the funds released earlier.

They bought it specifically to close it, didn't they? I know that in Japan, they weren't able to, though, as Yahoo! Auctions was (and remains) the dominant such site over there, so they actually kept it running there.

It's not just this site, many sites refer to eBay as Evilbay of Fleabay etc.

I personally think it's a great site and it's my first port of call for anything I buy online.

Hi all

I think ebay is okay, but for some reason I get angry every time I look on there for Amiga stuff. There's this UK seller who obviously buys job lots and then lists things at ridiculous prices and doesn't seem to know much about what he's selling as everything is untested, it really winds me up, I don't know why, maybe I need to go and see a therapist.

I have these crazy schemes where I'd set up a rival operation and sell everything cheaper (predatory pricing) and drive him out of the market the greedy ****, and give all the proceeds to charity. But I suppose someone else will come a along and fill the void. I think I have to get out more, really. I still don't get how this can make me so angry, maybe Amiga is not the best hobby for me :(

Well, I put an SX-1 up for sale on Egay, but the only reaction I got was from some tosser, who was asking me all kinds of trivial questions, but at the end of the day never showed any real interest.

Oh, and today I saw an A1K for sale @ [SNIP],-

I think that it's called doing business, and that's what this whole planet mainly evolves around.

I know. I've studied economics and understand capitalism - this is why I said maybe I need to see a therapist or something, because this one trader makes me angry, and all he is doing is business...

In that case, you should be able to relate to this...

Which is what Amibay was set up to be an alternative too.
If you want to engage in a free market, and gouge people, you're in the wrong place. We're an enthusiast's trading forum, started because we despised that sort of attitude, and loved our hobby.

Yes, their fees suck. Yes, there are loads of bad sellers on there. Caution has to be exercised, just like anywhere.

But I find it odd that so many people on here call it names like Evilbay?

It's largely memetic. One or two people will use the term, then others will see it, be a tad amused and use it themselves. Suddenly you find lots of people use the term, it's become part of our culture.

Personally, I like to refer to it as The Other Bay, and it's still a great place if you're a buyer, but it's not so hot if you're trying to sell stuff.

Who said they wanted to gouge people? I was saying how it really makes me angry?

It wasn't directly aimed at you, more of a general statement.
The seller described earlier is well known in the community, and provides a service that can be used if you wish. However, his activities, and the activities of others like him, were a catalyst which led to the creation of Amibay.
Unfortunately, gouging and price driving afflict many hobbies, not just this one. It's just that we do something about it, and provide an alternative.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and possibly get a slap on the wrist for doing so but here goes

That particular seller is not a fair reflection of ebay and he is an out and out con artist who will employ any foul and repungnat tactics he can to fleece people. The fact that he has targeted the Amiga and ebay as an avenue to turn people over is incidental. Unfortunately there are wrong'uns in life and we just have to do our best to aviod them.

Please do not get the impression that all are like this cos they aren't

maybe people are ****ed because some sellers buy stuff off from hobbyist boards like this one and sell them on ebay afterwards for some profit. also, ebay is a lot more easier way for people to buy (better visibility = better $$ from stuff) from ebay and comparing prices what to ask for example from joysticks or turbo cards.

That particular seller is the prime reason that I rarely look on ebay for general Amiga stuff anymore rather than a specific item I'm wanting because for every genuine private listing you have to trawl through page after page of his utter dross

Some do this on eBay itself, and I can tell you, it's just as unpleasant and annoying being a seller dealing with some of these types as it is being a buyer looking for things that they've been hoarding to price-gouge with.

I once sold an item which was sniped at the last minute by a dealer, who had hoarded several of the same item and had them all listed at extremely inflated Buy It Now prices. Long story short, the market decided on a rather lower price than the dealer's listings, the dealer bid on the item to knock the listing offline so that their own sales looked better/were the only game in town, and I couldn't Second Chance Offer the other chap by the time I'd waited the suggested week-ish to be paid because he'd already found another one elsewhere by then. I relisted the item and barred the dealer from bidding, and he must have tried to bid (and/or read the note I sent about an impending Non-paying Bidder strike, which I later learned he already had two of, presumably for the same behaviour; Can't be sure on that, though, as he ignored all correspondence from me), because suddenly there was a payment on the original listing. It all worked out in the end, but it soured me on it, and on those sorts of sellers, considerably. :p

I agree. If its not enough that he turns over £5000/month gouging people, he then clogs everyone else out of ebay.

I had multiple experiences where I got outbid and was offered a second chance at buy it now, I also bought a monitor that after a week began show lines, seller knew it, but didn't accept to return it. Also had items that suffered damage due to improper packaging and the list goes on and on.
After those experiences it really became Evilbay for me, now it's Buy-it-now only for me and from sellers who do know how to package well.
But even then I rarely use it anymore, I keep it to search for parts cause it's great for that, but no retro items, if I had an alternative for parts I would destroy my Ebay account
