Having a look around and found this on the 'otherbay'...

Is it just me or do others feel this is just so wrong?

I had to remove the ebay link since it was an auction but I copied the pictures here for people to see. They may give me nightmares. :D

It can be quite sad to see a classic piece of hardware used like this, but if the original hardware died then I don't have a problem with it, and find it quite cool.

I've been wanting to install a pc inside an A1200 case for years.

Its uncomfortable to look at. But hey, if the innards are dead, honouring the system by recycling the shell isn't a bad way to go. Particularly if you set it up as an emulator machine :) I'd rather that than bin it as most would have before now. Just think how many of these beauties have been trashed... that's where the nightmares are born!

Completely agree. Some people can't help but place their selfish whims as more imprtant than the needs of everyone else. They just take what they want, do what they like to it, without a care if they break it - ruining it for everybody.

Then what happens? They find they are too inexperienced to fix it.

Do they care?

No. They absolutely do not.

It just isn't right, and it spoils it for everyone else that just wants to get on and enjoy their hobby.

Years ago, I had an unused A2000 in the cupboard. I didn't think I would ever give a stuff about it again. So, I used the case top as some air filter ducting on my turbocharged hatch :o I forget what I did with the rest of it.

Does that make you upset?

i love it, neat job well done, as you all know i have done many projects like this and i have many more to go, i like repurposing cases, but thanks for the heads up about my selfishness and general all round crapness.

cheers guys, Justin

Thanks for fixing that Heather... didn't even give it a thought when posting. Seems I may have opened a can of worms too (sorry). I suppose that it proves each of us has our own opinions on what is and is not acceptable when it comes to old hardware. As an example, I have a Commodor 1581 floppy drive that the previous own marked with a postcode on the top of the facia - why did he not mark it underneath or on the back? It's not acceptable to me but obviously was to him. Another good one is these people that want to personalise their case by spray painting it.... boils my blood as (in my opinion) they have wasted the millions of R&D money used to design that case, devalued some hardware and made it less appealing to collectors. I would only ever buy something like that as a donor to make a good machine.

@ColourWHeel64: ouch, a bit harsh!

It really depends how rare the retro computer is. Much worse is when I hear someone say "I've decided to fix my extremely rare retro computer as my first electronics project. I've bought a huge non-regulated soldering iron from China and a claw-hammer and I'm ready to go!". Then you just know that there's one less of them to go around.

Bryce.

Yep, seen that one before. I will repair most of my stuff but if I know something is particularly special I send away (eg, my Sam Coupe is currently on it's way to a man who can) as I just don't want to make matters worse, nor do I know (in this case) any common faults or even have spares.

It's their own stuff, so they're free to do whatever they like to it. I don't see how someone doing something like this ruins anything for anyone else. It's not like these computers are some sort of open shareware asset where anyone can just pop over and use someone's Amiga if they feel like it.
Also getting your panties in a bunch over stuff like this is pointless. Entropy happens whether you want it to or not. Eventually all of these systems will be dead and gone and the fact that some of the units have been hastened on their way by enthusiasts, or amateurs is not really going to make much difference in the bigger scale of things.

Are you kidding!?? In the year 2176, when the Robot Overlords have enslaved us, our only chance of survival will be to use Commodore 64s and Amstrad CPCs that aren't connected to their network!! Oh, wait... we went and designed network cards for these... We're dooooooomed!!!

Really looking forward to doing an Ellen Ripley with one of those Walker droids when the future comes

I look forward to capturing one of these Robot Overlords and using it as a case mod for my new PC.

Who'd have thought the world's most devastating weapon would make such a downright cool media jukebox?

Plus, with the intelligence to cook breakfast to individual specification too!

Bags me the santa robot from futurama. "You have been really really naughty."

The way I see it, it's theirs to do what they want with, and so it doesn't bother me. That said, I do still think it's a shame if a working machine was gutted for such a thing, but that doesn't bother me either.

I will say one thing: It's certainly not as freaky as making a PC case out of a taxidermied beaver.

That's why I had to hold back on them :)
