Why does uninstalling PC Games take so long? Why can't they just delete all the files(folder) in one go, remove reg entry and that's it? - why all this validating install BS, removing one file at a time, etc, etc.

What will really annoy you is that after uninstalling you sometimes get these next problems:

1. Please restart your machine!!!!! ARGH icard thanks for making the process even longer and more painful.

and/or

2. The bloody thing still appears in your add/remove programs list and is permanently stuck and never disappears (without hacks or cleaners!!!!) icard


If you get both these :double give up

Use Steam. It removes games immediately. (Installing may take a little while, but probably not much longer than from DVD if you have a decent internet hookup.)

Disc-based games tend to install a fair bit of DRM crap that they will then also remove. And then there's Windows Installer which doesn't help with speed.

Oh, and get an SSD?

Ugh, been there. My Win98 computer crashed half way through installing Baldur's Gate.

Re-run the installer: "Cannot install Baldur's Gate, already installed".
Go to add-remove programs: "Cannot uninstall Baldur's Gate, it's not installed"

Just got an SSD for my new Windows drive

Upgrading the PC this week hence clearing space on my SATA II Data drives as I will move them to the new PC but leave my old IDE HDD's and move my old PC setup into another chassis to use as a spare PC, that's why I'm removing the games properly!

I don't really do a lot of PC gaming these days, a lot of these games have been on the HDD for a long time and either finished or not played a lot.

Not many decent new PC games coming out that I've noticed but there a few titles that didn't run well on my old machine like Crysis 2 I'm looking forward to playing on the new setup

I got a nice new 1Tb SATA III HDD I will install the games too under the new setup, hopefully that's reasonable fast.

When I install a game on my mac I either buys it off steam or app store and it installs automatically, or I just drag the icon over from the disk image. when I uninstall it I drag the icon to the trashcan.

When I install a game on my linux machine, I either grabs it from the repository or download a package from a webpage. then runs an installer on it and it's in. when i want to remove it i just run the remove command in the package handler. everything can be done from command line as well.

if it is something built from source i can usually just do a 'make uninstall'.

the only problem is with generic linux games that require a bunch of weird fragmented libs.

Yeah you have to love it if you want to game properly. although I do like other OSes like OSX

I do run Lion which has some other quirks but really to get the best out of desktop gaming (optimised games COD etc) you still need to run Windows and get used to the installer!

I have high hopes for the Mac App Store, I got Neverwinter Nights 2 from there for the cost of less than one single coin (hopefully not price driving). Amazing and the installer is nice and easy too!

No system is ever perfect I suppose

Windows 7 will remove entries from add/remove programs that no longer exist.

You will get something like "this uninstaller no longer exists, do you want to remove it from the list?"
