Windows 7 has a file path limit of 256 characters :picard It's 2012, this is ridiculous

Apparently it's a explorer limitation, not the filesystem... 256 characters is enough for anybody

Yeah it's well daft, particularly on network paths.
And to make it worse some non-alphanumeric characters count as more than 1!

I don't understand why this is a problem, it's always existed and using spaced and strange characters in filenames and path names is just bad practice. Would you really do that on any other OS?

Oh I had many a happy hour a month or so ago copying data from a server to a new one... 400+ files to manually alter because the file names were ludicrously long...

I'm amazed, if not really surprised to hear that this limitation still lives on. I hit it back in the win9x days. You'd have thought they'd have fixed that one by now!

i still dot understand why you cant have folders.
Games
games
GameS
and
GAMES
all in the same directory in windows.

that one gets me most when transfering files to and from an internet server.

256 charicters isnt something im likley to use.

Linux user my any chance Shambles? It is more logical to the average user that if a file or directory has a name it remains unique, so Windows sees Games and games as the same. Linux by contrast sees them as 2 completely different names that can co-exist next to each other. IMO that can use problems.

It's a real ballache in a networked environment!

Actually it's not that bad.. if you use Robocopy (bundled with 2008)...
