Write .d64 Disk images to a disk drive?

How easy is it to write .d64 images back to a 5' disk drive so I can play them on a C64?

very easy

C64+SDiEC+CBM Commander = Automatically writing out to disk from d64/d71/d81

Additionally a PC running Star Commander + XM1541 adapter + C= Disk Drive also works reasonably well.

USB->Parallel->XM1541->iEC Cable->1541 (or compatible) drive

tho Star Commander probably wont run under 7 any more, i used it running XP, but i had no issue having USB devices recognized in a Virtual Machine using Oracle VM so it'd probably work fine in there.

I`m doing this with an XM1541 (fankoo merlin) cable hooked up to an old P3 pc running dual boot, debian+Midnight Commander and a freedos bootdisk with Star Commander and a real 1541 drive.
Can be a bit hit and miss with some of the more recent demo`s but overall for a cheap solution it is quite workable.

I have previously used the X cables and they work fine when you use opencbm. However since owning a Zoom Floopy from Jim Brains Retro Innovations I havent looked back... USB.. works with all versions of windows, will handle a parallel interface.. in short a awesome little peripheral.

If you decide to use Zoom Floppy there is a specific version of OpenCBM that interfaces with the device.

I was just fed up of loading old OS's and finding parallel ports so I took the plunge. Its was priced low enough to be worth a punt and am pleased to say it was a good purchase.

I am also using an XM1541 cable on my Pentium IV machine, but could never get Star commander in DOS to work reliably, but OpenCBM in windows XP AND Linux works perfectly here.

I just bought a XE1541 Transfer Cable to use star commander on my old pc cuz i wanted to use d64 files on my c64. Am i doing right in getting this cable or have i just wasted money lol

If you get hold of a double pole, double throw switch and wire it up like this diagram, you will have a dual XE1541 / XM1541 cable....

Oh not at all, it will work fine. I use zoom as it is more convinient. Both produce the same results so as long as you get to play your c64 it doeant matter how you do it

got a zoomfloppy (no parr port on my pc) and im running win7 64bit, no problems at all and i can even run vice emulator using my real 1541-ii , im making my own compo disks dragging the PRG files from D64 to my real 1541-ii to load and play the old way on a real c64 on a 40" tv

The zoomfloppy connects on one side via usb to your PC and via the normal disk cable to the 1541 etc that you use to read the floppies.

Oh and I highly recommend them too, I'm using mine on my laptop running Win 7 x64.
