Now I know some you guys are Army / RAF chaps and a generally clever lot so..

My step father (step) was a royal engineer in ww2 and saw service in Burma / india / and various other places. He joined with his 2 best pals and joined the army in derby in 1940 but his friends were killed in action and he narrowly survived to make it home and marry my mum many years later..

But he never collected his medals as he's was horrified by what he saw and the treatment of men during the war.

He sadly died in 2000 and never really spoke about the war at all but as a child we used to watch every war film that was on and occasionally he would say ' I was there then' but to me it didn't mean anything - I was a kid.

Anyway - I wanted to get his medals for my
Mums birthday a couple of years ago and I started the process only to be told , only then next of Kim can apply ...

I'm a step son and he had kids of his own ..

My mum has since passed away and I'm wondering if I can apply for then even if I'm only a step son ..

I'm going to try and let you know how I get on but I don't have his army number only his name and dob.

Strangely after his death we found out his birthday was the day before he said it was and we never knew!

Mike.

best of luck m8

Royal engineers First in last out, we make it happen

Ex-sapper here too!

One port of call might be RE Records, which used to be in Glasgow (Kentigern House). They would have all the details from his service record and which medals he would have been entitled to.

There was also RPO at Glagow although I *think* that may have moved now, Im not sure.

If you need the address for these (Used to be both the same) send me a P.M

I used to work in the Regimental Admin Office (As it was later called, and before we all went to the crappy AGC; I do still remember a lot of the info, even after 17 years lol)

Fathers Medals.

Fathers Medals.

Hi mjnurney,

See the Royal Engineers web site

see http://www.army.mod.uk/royalengineers/engineers.aspx

and contact them with your problem.

Also

Check out http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/DefenceFor/Veterans/Medals/ContactingTheMedalOffice.htm

As a Step Son ideally you should produce your Fathers service number with his name and Unit.

However, I'm sure if you contact them and can prove your relationship you should be successfull.

Best of luck.

Regards, Michael
