I bought a my first unbranded 2x writer(mitsumi.well nasty) in 98 and that quickly went south ! and got sick of coasters ,I then found the Pioneer range of writers I.E first bought 108 and last one bought was the 112d and found them reliable with a good laser life:)
Used MakeCD which I think for the time was a brill piece of software and well supported drives with specific drivers that you could tweek a little.
Infact I have just used MakeCD on my A1200 project for the first time in a decade ! love it :)

I didn't get one until 2002 when I got a G4 iMac. My previous PC was a 1997 Compaq which only came with a CD-Rom.

I had a Iomega Zip 100 (parallel port PC) before I even got a CD writer, sometime back around 1998.

Very good it was too, as most of the Uni PCs had a zip drive, great for downloading my warez ......... and some course work :) which could have fitted on a 1.44mb disk anyway!

I got a ZIP drive a year or two after the CD-R, I worked in an Apple Service center and repaired mac's all days. They had a fixed internet connection so I downloaded everything i could from Aminet onto a few 100M Zip's and took them back home to my A4000 and plugged the SCSI ZIP in :) Mac's loved SCSI as well so it was not hard to find ZIP drives :) But they where expensive.

My zip drive and disks still works, used one last week that haven't been in use for almost 15 years.

First up was a Yamaha cdr-101 4x scsi caddy model. £565 in 1996.:)
