About ZuluSCSI

The ZuluSCSI family of SCSI emulation products is available firmware looks for file names which adhere to a simple but powerful naming convention, and presents them as the drives to the SCSI host. Each image file represents a SCSI drive.

ZuluSCSI is designed to power itself solely from SCSI termination power, with no separate power source needed, when the host device/computer provides SCSI termination power. Nearly all desktop Macintosh computers do, as well as the vast majority of other desktop systems with SCSI interfaces.

ZuluSCSI RP2040 includes an optional DB25 pin header for direct installation of an external SCSI connector, in addition to the Single-Ended 50 pin IDC connector. The full-sized ZuluSCSI RP2040 shares the exact same dimensions and mounting holes as that of SCSI2SD V5.1, V5.2, and V6, and is therefore compatible with many existing SCSI2SD-V5.1, V5.2, and V6 mounting solutions.

ZuluSCSI RP2040 can deliver up to 9.5 megabytes/second, and maximum write speeds of approximately 6 megabytes/second. Throughput rates can be affected by particularly slow (eg. 8MHz 68000) CPUs. SCSI controllers can be, and often are, bottlenecks. Since ZuluSCSI uses the same SCSI command handling code as SCSI2SD V6, compatibility with nearly all devices that speak both SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 is extremely high.

Termination is DIP-switch controlled, and firmware updates are as simple as placing a file on a FAT32 or exFAT-formatted SD card, inserting it in the SD card slot, and applying power to the ZuluSCSI. A firmware recovery mechanism is also provided, as a back-up.

ZuluSCSI™ is a SCSI computer storage emulation platform, which speaks both SCSI-1 and SCSI-2. It uses file-based SCSI HDD & CD-ROM images, similar to RaSCSI and BlueSCSI. It represents a fusion of firmware and concepts from both SCSI2SD V6 and BlueSCSI. Hard drive and CD-ROM drive images are stored on a standard FAT32 or exFAT-formatted SD card.

Features

  • Open-source firmware, licensed under the GPLv3
  • Emulates up to 7 SCSI devices simultaneously, including CD-ROM, Magneto Optical, removable (SyQuest/Jaz-style), and SCSI floppy device types
  • Speaks both SCSI-1 and SCSI-2, including 10MB/sec Fast SCSI
  • Up to 9.5 megabytes/second read speeds, 6MB/sec write speeds (on ZuluSCSI RP2040-based models)
  • SCSI Termination is DIP-switch controlled
  • Firmware upgrade simplicity; As easy as placing a file on the SD card
  • Highly configurable using a text-based ini file, ZuluSCSI.ini
  • External activity LED pin header for attaching remote activity LED
  • Designed to be powered via SCSI termination power, when provided by the host
  • Optional DB25 pin header for direct installation of an external SCSI connector, in addition to the Single-Ended 50 pin IDC connector
  • Identical dimensions and mounting holes as that of SCSI2SD V5.1, V5.2, and V6, making it compatible with many existing SCSI2SD-specific mounting solutions
  • SCSI bus transceivers, as used in SCSI2SD V5 and SCSI2SD V6 Rev F

Firmware structure

  • SCSI command implementations are from SCSI2SD
  • SCSI physical layer code is mostly custom, with some inspiration from BlueSCSI
  • Image file access is derived from BlueSCSI

Major improvements from BlueSCSI and SCSI2SD

  • Separation of platform-specific functionality to separate directory to ease porting
  • Ported to the RP2040 and GigaDevice GD32F205 ARM Cortex processors
  • Removal of Arduino core dependency
  • Simultaneous transfer between SD card and SCSI bus for improved performance

Bay panels are not 3D prints. These are original, professional plastic castings specifically made for this product. I bought them some time ago when they were available in the USA. However, having worked in the metal industry for over 25 years, I made my own metal rear brackets. To put it mildly, 3D prints are far from functional. I bought them several times and was very, very disappointed. The metal brackets are professionally made from metal, laser-cut, and bent on a CNC machine. They are powder-coated for a scratch-resistant finish. Through my dedication and several attempts, I managed to align the cutouts and the switch with a tolerance of less than a millimeter. However, I do not intend to produce this item again. This is a one-time series. I am selling it in a few places, and once it's sold, that's it. You won’t find anything like this again because no one will put in the hours of effort to design it in 3D and manufacture it professionally.

Paint is black powder. Screws included. No microSD card. Sorry

You can find me on a four letter sales portal (global shipping) and a two letter social portal. RetroAndGamers.

Regards and have fun.
