My love/hate realationship with Windows and Linux

Really? OK.. Difference of definition.. I look at an install archive as something external. I believe a repository can be a type of install archive. But I don't see a singe compressed file as an install archive. Although now that I read that out loud, it is like a tarball, which is an...

No, that's not an install archive.. That's an executable that has all of the BITS it needed included or assuming that the OS has them.. While that tends to work well for windows apps, it's not arguably the same.. It's totally different. ;-) If the OS and the executable don't have all the...

It isn't perfect, I'll grant that.. But I think it happens most of the time.... Still better than .NET versions.. ;-) desiv

OK, what were you doing when you got the above weirdness?? What app?? I want to try it.. desiv (p.s. "Lots of apps" isn't a valid answer) ---------- Post added at 23:58 ---------- Previous post was at 23:47 ---------- Thanx for the specifics.. I'll check it out.. I have 32-bit at home...

Oh.. Then you're wrong.. ;-) I know several people who run Linux and know nothing about Linux dev stuff and would run away screaming if I said "type ./configure".... Agreed.. I never recommend WINE to anyone. Windows in a VM is a much better option, IMHO... You haven't used Synaptic...

It's really not that complicated.. (IMHO) If you want simple, you use Ubuntu (or Mint), you install it and just he apps that come from the default Synaptics package manager... And it basically just works... Now, you try doing things like getting "other" apps to work and it can get tricky, but...

    OUYA - android game console

And that's exactly why it's not about hardware.. It's going to be (IMHO) about the Ouya "store" experience. If they get that right (and they seem to have the right people involved, but who knows), they can come up with a software validation/distribution system that pleases the masses before it...

    Has anyone re-cap'ed a Vectrex?

I've got to do that to my Vec... When I first power it up, it takes quite a while to start, which I'm told is usually CAPs.. Thanx for that link, lots of good info too... I don't have a desolder station, but I just got a new rework station and I have a solder sucker and some wick if needed...

Do certain whdload installs only work when registered?

I'm not saying that's the issue with Top Gear 2.. When I ran across it, it was with FEARS: I eventually found this: http://www.whdload.de/games/Fears.html (I'm not seeing similar wording in the Top Gears slave page, so maybe not the same issue? Just said it need v16+) As for what's that to do...

Do certain whdload installs only work when registered?

Not a WHDload slave author, so it's all a guess, but I'm figuring it's one of two (or both) thoughts. 1: The method in place isn't encouraging enough, given the number of people who haven't registered. 2: An extra reward for the people who have registered.. As a registered owner, I'm OK with...

Do certain whdload installs only work when registered?

It's up to the author of the slave to do that or not.. If you don't like it, you can write your own slave for that game.. ;-) Seriously tho, it's a very small percentage of games so there are PLENTY enough games that work for you to decide if you like it or not... IMHO desiv

What did you get for Christmas?

Got my C64 working with the 1541... No, not a new C64 or 1541.. No, not new parts for either... My 1541 serial cable was home-made, and my soldering ain't that good, so it disconnected at a few solders... I figured, since I know my soldering is really bad, it was just me... But (and I'm still...
