I was setting up a CF card today and randomly picked Top Gear 2 to test, it loaded no problem then immediately quit with this error. I thought all installs worked with the unregistered version? This happened a few times in a row as I thought it might be a one off but it clearly isn't. Don't tell me to register (I have) I want to know why it's doing this.

Indeed some games need registration.

If you have a registered key perhaps it's in the wrong directory?

My key is fine I was making the card up for someone else. I wanted to know if some games don't work without one. Any idea how many are like this and how they are decided? Is there a list of none working slaves for unregistered users?

i found a few that wouldent work before i registered, all of the ones that didnt where multiple disk games like project x.

That's a bit rubbish. I thought the whole point of the WHDload demo was so that you could try the games you care about before dropping your hard-earned on a copy.

It's up to the author of the slave to do that or not..

If you don't like it, you can write your own slave for that game.. ;-)

Seriously tho, it's a very small percentage of games so there are PLENTY enough games that work for you to decide if you like it or not...

It seems odd that a slave author would do that at all. After all, the WHDload author has already put in place a system to encourage people to buy...

Not a WHDload slave author, so it's all a guess, but I'm figuring it's one of two (or both) thoughts.

1: The method in place isn't encouraging enough, given the number of people who haven't registered.
2: An extra reward for the people who have registered..

As a registered owner, I'm OK with either.. ;-)

But what's that to do with the slave author? That's my only real question...

The Top Gear 2 slave author is Galahad, given the piracy activities of Fairlight it would be quite ironic if it was his choice to make it a registered users only slave.. they probably cracked and released it originally :)

I'm not saying that's the issue with Top Gear 2..
When I ran across it, it was with FEARS:

I eventually found this:
The floppy version of the game only works with the registered version of WHDLoad. If you have not yet registered WHDLoad, this patch will NOT work. You will return to the workbench right after the trainer options.
http://www.whdload.de/games/Fears.html
(I'm not seeing similar wording in the Top Gears slave page, so maybe not the same issue? Just said it need v16+)

As for what's that to do with the slave author.....
Why not.. ;-)

There is a bunch of games that will not work in unregistered version of WHDLoad.

The ones I remember right now are:
Ghosts & Goblins
Pinball Fantasies (or is it P. Dreams?)
688 attack sub

Plus a handful of others.

Not a really large list.

Actually, I'd already guessed it would probably be Galahad. That guy is on a one-man mission to rid the world of pirate copies of WHDload. I've never seen anyone so obsessed. I think he's actually more bothered about it than Wepl is.

Why not..

It just bugs me that the program has already got its way of handling this and someone else thinks it's not good enough for them. Not a biggie, it just doesn't sit right with me. :)

Maybe some slave authors don't want unregistered users using their installers? I can think of one very active author that could be that awkward.

i didnt really mind paying the fifteen quid for the key, hell, it was a snip for a large amount of installs.

to be honest,i didnt get the key because some of the games didnt work the biggest reason was because of the nag requester.
when i found out how much it was,i thought yeah why not.

If you're using it you should register - regardless of any nag screen, however a slave author putting their "own" stuff in place on top is a bit cracked  Maybe someone is feeling the need to redeem themselves

Registered a couple of days ago and got my key the other day

More than happy to support it, just hadn't had much of a chance to play much of anything through whdload yet .. now I did play some more lemmings the other day (well my 8 yr old daughter mainly) and played some pinball fantasies or maybe it was dreams ... that however worked fine unregistered :)
