Dear Community,

time to equip one of my C64 with an 1541 Ultimate or similar item.

I want to play games from SD card, so any version/type of such a hardware is welcome.

Regards
Jon

Hey Jon,

If you want to be able to play just about any game from SD on your C64 then the 1541 Ultimate II is the way to go. If you're looking for a less expensive, but still very good, alternative then I would check out Jim Brain's uIEC/SD.

Good luck in your search. :)

Yeah Jim's uIEC/SD is a very nice devise i'm still learning to use it better
also he redesigning the daughter card here's the site..

Gideon's 1541-U2 is the best and definitely worth it if you don't mind to spend that amount money. I also got two SD2IEC from Jim and they are a very good quality build product. If you have some soldering skills the SD2IEC can easily be build based on the DIP/DIL ATMega644P.

I used the schematics by AntaBaka to build one myself and it offers the same functionality as the one's by Jim, but at an even lower price.

Yep! I'm excited about his redesign of the daughter board. If you already have a uIEC/SD then you should definitely try to find a 1541U or 1541U-II. It's the only device that is going to give you better functionality than the uIEC/SD.

Again, good luck in the search.

I have a breadbin one that the new daughter board might work well in
as A toploader above the cartridge port..

Jon,

The mmc2iec / sd2iec or any other SD solution will only work with games that do not have built-in fast loaders or games that allow you to disable the built-in fast loader. Fast loaders built into games actually load custom code into a 1541's processor to take care of the fast loading of the software. The 1541U and 1541U-II are the only devices that emulate the 1541's processor. Because of this, there are many games that will simply not work on anything other than a 1541U, 1541U-II or a real 1541 or compatible floppy drive.

This is the same reason you cannot use a C64 copy program to copy a D64 to a real disk when you use a SD device other than a 1541U(-II). Many games, such as Pool of Radiance, will work fine from a SD2IEC because they either don't use fast loaders or allow you to disable them when starting the game.

Hope that explains it a little better. :)

Good luck!

Heather

Thanks for all your posts

Well, will a mmc2iec / sd2iec fit my needs of just gaming from SD?

I have the first Version of the 1541U and it is really a damn good solution, but i also know some games that even don´t work with a 1541U...

If you have some time wait for the final version of the Chameleon...http://www.vesalia.de/d_chameleon.htm

Hi!

Remember that you have nearly 300 games converted to M2I, specifically made for sd2iec... Many of them don't load from D64, and were converted to this format :)

Regards.

if you do acquire an sd2iec device i highly recommend downloading CBMCommand @

http://cbmcommand.codeplex.com/

it is an excellent file manager for CBM (VIC20/C64/C128/Plus4/PET) systems, supports sd2iec and will copy to and from d64/d71/d81s on the SD

Yes this is a great program I still like using Omega-Q but that does not
work with uIEC/SD to well so I do use CBMCommand 2.0 alot now..

The hardware of the Chameleon is already the final version, but the software is still being developed. It is a nice product, but I'm not sure it will be better in 1541 emulation than the Ultimate is. Still I could not resist and got one some time ago... both Gideon and Jens make very nice hardware for our beloved C='s...

Chameleon hardware as braimpy said it's final! They only fix the software+cores at the moment.

I uploaded today a video on YouTube of my testing Chameleon booting Minimig core as well :)
Gotta love this little fellow. I hope it'll get upgraded to the teeth including more cores :)
