Hello

I just got myself an A1000 and I want to get myself a kickstart adapter.
I've seen a couple for sale, but what bugs me abit is that the spacing between the two chip sockets on the ones I see for sale is much more narrower than on the mainboard in my A1000.

In mine there is space for four bootroms, two is installed, but they are installed in such a way that a kickstart adapter would not reach both sockets.

Any insights on this?

Regards
Tommy

Hi Tommy,

All versions (NTSC and PAL) of A1000 mainboards have space for 4 bootrom. But, onto all of these boards, you'll always find only two bootroms.
Do you know which version of A1000 you own? PAL or NTSC.

If you want a Rom adapter, you can take a look at my thread here:

You can contact me for any question. :-)

Regards,
Franck

Tommy, you have a PAL A1000.
Yes, my Kickstart switcher can be used with the version (and also with others versions).
You'll have to remove the two bootroms and then to plug the PCB of the switcher into their sockets as shown in the picture below.

The motherboard that you see in the picture is a NTSC version, but the adapter is the same.

Nice, so your adapter has four "plugs" down towards the motherboard so that it can accomodate all variants?

Also, do you think it is possible if I copy the bootroms to an eprom and then use that eprom as my second kickstart to be able to boot kickstart from floppy as normal, in addition to a kick 3.1 in the first socket of your adapter?

No, only tree "plugs" are needed to allow the switcher to be used onto all versions of A1000 motherboards.

No, it's impossible to use the bootroms onto an Eprom. And to use the switcher, you have to make some modifications onto the motherboard.
The bootrom is used to load the kickstart from a floppy disk. With the switcher, the kickstart is already into the Eprom. The Kickstart is loaded immediately after the power up of the computer.

I use it with a 4Mb expansion produced by kipper + an ide68k (it's like a memory/CF board) without any problem. So that should work also with the 8Mb/CF board.
If you want informations about installation of the switcher, send me a PM to give me an email.
