hi all ,

i have recently aquired myself a600 & a cf hd . i have set that all up fine with wb2.1 but im running into issues when tryin 2 run installed games from the hd .

now i believe this is down 2 the internal 1mb ram not really being enough ?

what is my best & cheapest option for upgrading this ? addition memory in the trap door ? or a sram pcmcia ?

as much as i love playin swos from the floppy it be sweet running it from the hd ! :)

also is it worth getting a external floppy if the hd is gonna work well ?

any help would be appreciated

thanks

2mb (1meg on board, 1 in the trapdoor) will run single disc games just fine through WHDLoad, but two disc games I've found to need more...

if i was you(and i have)is to get more chipram and more fastram its a more pleasant experience the amiga will thank you.:)

make it 2mb chip and 2-4mb of fast.

that deffo could be what im looking for !

do you know how it is fitted ? do i need to solder it to the board ? or does it just slot in ?

thanks

It slots directly on top of the CPU, but it doesn't work 100% on all 600s. I have one which I tried fitting in one of my 600s, but the connections weren't 100% so it didn't work at all. I fitted a new socket to the expansion board which should be a better fit. It does work a lot better as it actually works for a little while, but the machine still crashes eventually. I think the heat expansion causes things to move a little bit, causing intermittent connections. On my other 600 it seems to work fine, so there is a bit of luck involved getting it to work. I did clean the CPU pins several times thoroughly so I don't think that is the issue.

Conclusion, it might work fine as it does for most people, but it is not simple plug and play for someone who has never opened up a computer.

The socket on the ACA620 accelerator seems to sit better on the CPU, and I can definitely recommend that board. It will give you both speed from the 020 CPU as well as plenty of memory for the 600. This being said, even the ACA620 may not sit perfectly on all CPUs as the upside down socket is a hack.

I run 2MB Chip and 2MB fast on my A600 and it loads every WHDLoad game I've tried on it, so would be more than enough. Mine has a 1MB trapdoor expansion and a 2MB SRAM PCMCIA card.

But if you can get an internal fast ram upgrade and it works, that is much better, and neater.

Just remember that if you install move than 4MB fast ram the PCMCIA slot will become disabled, so if you want to use that for a network card, or a CF transfer card then stick to 4MB or less fast ram.

If you install an ACA620 you will still be able to use the PCMCIA port even though you get ~11MB fast ram.
