Advice Needed On Painting A Console

hey guys,

First of all i wouldn't consider painting a console unless i thought it really needed it.

Im really interested in maybe painting a snes console i own, I would really love to do something along the lines of this modded snes without the sword eject button.

So my question is this, what is the best kind of paint to use for doing something like this, i have checked youtube and checked out a few videos here and there yet i find there is no definitive answer as such. My other question i have is how did he/she get the zelda console to look so glossy ?

Could it just be done by applying a few layers of clearcoat after u have painted the console ?

I'm interested in any info or advice u might have for me and would love to see pics and hear from people who have actually tried it.

All I can say is to make sure that it a specialist 'plastic paint'.

These have solvents that will not melt plastics - that & to try some on the inside first if poss, just to make sure it comes out as you planned before starting on the whole outside.

I don't know how they in that photo got the finish so glossy but I do paint guitars sometimes and it involves several passes with increasingly fine grades of sandpaper before buffing it down. But maybe it's totally different for consoles.

that has been painted with high gloss metal finish paint, it looks like 2 pack paint as well.

if this is the sort of finish you are after thake the stripped down case to your local car bodyshop repair centre and ask them for a quote

i know for definite that id have to attack it with some really fine sandpaper, its really just the paints and clearcoat that im not too sure on. 1 option is to go to a local hardware store and just ask for plastic paint but in the videos i have watched i even seen someone spray a console with like some kind of car bumper paint. The second option being taking it to a local car body shop as Justin said but i kinda feel like that would be taking the easy way out and just paying for someone to do it for me.

That will work - these paints are specially designed not to either soften plastic or make it more brittle as both of these would contravene safety standards for car bumpers.

These paints will definitely be able to be used...

Iv done a few consoles a while back , a dreamcast and gamecube, fine sandpaper , car paint undercoat clear lacquer to Finnish . Led lights are easy to just extend from the power led .

Ok sounds good so more or less any kind of car paint then and then once the paint is dry shoot it all with a clearcoat laquer. last question is do u think that u could use like a metal car paint or would it purely have to be plastic paint only ?

Im no expert but If the primer is plastic primer then a guess it should be ok . But car paint is mainly for metal but also is used on plastic parts .
Try some experiments on old bits of plastic and see what looks good.
Iv never been a fan of lacquer myself but if youv made a good job of it it's best protected with a layer.

What about "Tamiya" plastic model paints - the type that are used on RC Car and Buggy hard plastic body shells..?

Car paint in a spray can is the best stuff. I did a White MegaDrive going back a while, worked a treat. Buy a primer, paint and laquer and layer thinly for a really nice smooth job.
